My family attended the St Paul Rodeo for years. A family friend ran the gate the cowboys exited through and we kids would hang on it. Larry Mahan was a class guy who always had time for us kids. He gave one of the local kids his hat that had been smashed flat on the ride he just finished.
Those guys were tough. No helmets. no flak jackets. A Stetson, fancy shirt, good boots and a pair of Wranglers was all they needed

There’s a sign at Cheyenne frontier days where the cowboys enter the arena that says “ somewhere in this arena there is a little kid that wants to be just like you someday. You owe it to them to be the best you can be”

Larry was my youngest sister's first boyfriend when she was about 13 years old. The Mahans lived about a quarter mile from us in good ol' Brooks.
