By June 15, 1944, Operation Perch had been bungled by the British. Tilly-sur-Seulles had changed hands 22 times but was still in Nazi hands. Tilly-sur-Seulles would not fall until the 18th and Caen would not fall until July 20th. George S. Patton's Third Army would not be fully operational until August, and it was a war of attrition until the Third Army spearheaded the breakout. There were several American invasions in the European Theater in World War II with D-Day being the largest. Some others: November 8, 1942 Operation Torch Invasion of French North Africa. July 9, 1943 Operation Husky Invasion of Sicily. September 3, 1943 Operation Baytown Diversionary invasion of Calabria. September 9, 1943 Operation Avalanche Invasion of Italy. January 22, 1944 Operation Shingle Invasion of Anzio. June 6, 1944 Operation Overlord Invasion of Normandy. August 15, 1944 Operation Dragoon Invasion of Provence.
My granduncle died in the Invasion of Algiers, the easternmost part of Operation Torch.
