Sparky (Kenneth) McGrew passed away at 74 on Sept 14. Sparky was a place kicker for Dee Andros’s Beavers. He was a great guy, an underground construction wizard, father, golfer, coach, and firewood cutter. Sparky wanted to buy his family’s long time season ticket seats (Bleachers) and gave it a valiant effort. However, he was always turned away through official OSU channels. But that was all he needed to green light his plan to obtain his seats. When demo began on the west side Sparky made a day trip to Corvallis. He put on his hard hat and vest, grabbed his tool bag, and made his way in through the construction fence to the stadium. He went up to his seats, took his saws all out of his bag, and cut through the bench on each side of his 4 seats. He then un-bolted the section, tucked it under his arm, and walked back to his truck. Now THAT is a Beaver fan to be proud of. RIP Sparky!

Sparky McGrew was a Junior College transfer, the backup kicker to Lynn Boston on the 1971 team, only kicking in the Arizona game. McGrew was the 1972 starter.
The 1971 Arizona game is famous, because Oregon State blew a 22-7 third quarter lead to lose 34-22 for loss number six. Oregon State would not finish with fewer than six losses until 1999. Oregon State only won two games in 1972. McGrew led the team in scoring in 1972 with five field goals and eight extra-points. McGrew scored 23 of Oregon State's 131 points. 131 points in 11 games was Oregon State's most anemic offensive output between 1958 and 1975.
Sparky's son, Ben, played baseball in 2002.
RIP Sparky.
