J.B. Bickerstaff led the team in minutes, rebounds, and assists in 1997-98 and then confusingly transferred to Minnesota, which went on probation right after he got there. The Gophers went to the NIT in 2000-01, though, whereas Payne was gone by then.

The Gophers went to the NIT in 2000-01, though, whereas Payne was gone by then. That season may have been one of the most disappointing in memory. The recruits/roster the season before had me extremely pumped for a turnaround. Very young, athletic team, with a couple Vets in Woods and Vaden that could play. Incoming '96-97 Frosh: Corey Benjamin 15/4/2 JB 5/3/2 Carson Cunningham 15/3/5 Ron Grady 9/3/2 Nate Knight active 6'10" Nick Greene athletic 6'7"/RS Added Dino Tanner, Jason Heidi and still match the year before at 3-15 in Pac10 play. The following season without JB, Cunningham, Corey, and Grady... Dino, Heidi, Josh Steinthal go 13-14/7-11. Go figure...
