The thread on Bazzana's draft spot got me thinking.
The real money in MLB comes in the 2nd contract. We saw that with Ellsbury.
In the coming years, as Conforto hopefully gets healthy, and then with Madrigal, Kwan, Adley, etc, coming behind him, and now Baz, is there any push to create a serious endowment fund and get these guys on board when they finally get their big payday?
At the very least, it would be great if we could endow all the scholarships. But what else? Maybe an assistant's coaching salary? All of the assistant salaries?
In 2014, Ellsbury signed a 7-year deal for $153 million.
10+ years later, it's not out of the question that Adley and maybe some of those other guys could eventually get a $200 million contract.
If just one person gave 5 percent of a $200 million contract, or $10 million, putting that in a fund should throw off about $400k/yr. I think that would almost cover the scholarships. Do it with another player, and we should cover an assistant coach or two. Do it 5 times, and I think just about all expenses would be covered.
It wouldn't need to happen all at once. Getting a commitment to donate just 5%/yr (which would actually cost 2.5% of their take-home) would allow it to build slowly over time. In 20-30 years, our world class baseball program could be mostly paid for.
And what a seed it would be for other people who want to leave a legacy for OSU in other sports.
Stanford's massive endowment is the ideal example, and while we don't have that prestige or network, we do have a little pipeline going here that creates enough wealth to start moving the needle.
I hope OSU sees the long term possibilities here and starts planning accordingly to make its case, and outlines a plan and vision that gets people excited...

Micheal ‘s career earnings are 60 mill, good place to start. Kwanny new deal being worked on will put him at 80-100 mill for 5 years. The O’s better try and buy out some of Adley’ free agent years or the figures above are going to look like tip money

Interestingly enough, the 5th highest paid catcher in the league is James McCann, the Orioles backup catcher at 12 million a year.

But you make sure you're asking for the right thing. Put together a package and a pitch that paints a very vivid picture of an end result that builds excitement, and contrasts that with the possible dire circumstances that could result from the shaky ground that OSU finds itself on today. Will everybody go for it? No. Will they all give the same? No. But you never know if something could be the start of something special, if you don't try. |

Especially since none get near the reported amounts... fees ( financial advisors, cpas, etc), agents, multiple taxes, investments for tax breaks... $1 mil is an extraordinary gift. The problem, that was for a physical plant investment that's going to be there for ?? years. NIL $ are not a perpetual investment unless an 7 figure sum is invested almost like an endowment. Plus the gift if NIL $ isn't under your "control". You really really have to trust the collective in it's funding of contracts. OSU definitely had the baseball alumni to give, but not sure they'll want to keep doing it annually. Maybe if they get together for a onetime combined figure that can start slow and allowed to build. |

I never mentioned NIL. F*%& NIL. If anything, the existence of NIL represents the one threat that could erode our future success, so anything we can do to put this program on a concrete foundation is even more important.
I'm looking over at the wrestling program, and their scholarship endowment, and thinking we should strike while the iron is hot and do something similar for baseball. Maybe even more, if possible.
The future of OSU athletics and its funding is scary. Football and basketball, and all the minor sports, are at the mercy of our external funding sources. But if we take the right steps now, we could ensure that our baseball program is never impacted by such financial concerns, and is never a drain on our overall AD budget (and maybe even contributes to it).
We shouldn't take for granted what we have with this program. It is very, very special. I just want to see all possible steps taken to preserve this uniquely amazing success story.

Unfortunately a "scholarship fund" isn't gong to sell those seeking NIL deals.
I'm also uncertain on the new scholarship limitation rules. Can a school offer scholarships above the NCAA limit even if from a booster source?
I know players can receive school funded scholarships and grants, but not so sure boosters can add "scholarships" by having a booster fund. It would basically have to be NIL collective $ with a written contract for "work" provided. And, none of these monies can be offered to prospective recruits to induce them to sign.
Like it or not, NIL is here to stay in some form. It's the wild west right now and supplements to the 11.7 (can be split among 32 now... must have 25% of tuition value) is the easiest way to stay working within the NCAA guidelines for scholarships.

The point is to take some of the baseball expenses off the books through an endowment fund, and make sure that no future athletic director is ever forced to make tough decisions about the baseball program if this conference realignment mess doesn't break like we all hope. Barnes talks a good game about continuing to fund the AD at power 5 levels, but a few years down the line, we may very well need to accept a new reality. And while our other sports will need to accept that reality and adjust accordingly, I think we can take steps to ensure that this program remains funded at an elite level no matter what happens in our future. I'd like to see us try, anyway... |
