I read this article about sports facilities with a mix of awe and some sadness.... This kind of investment in facilities seems to be the requirement to be a college sports "player" at this point. Not sure if this is a healthy direction for educational institutions, regardless of where the money comes from. But that said, there is also no way Oregon State makes this kind of investment in facilities, and perhaps that is a good thing. Oh, but guess who gets ranked #1 here (note - I make no claims about the goodness of the article, but if the numbers are anywhere near correct, my feelings on the matter remain valid). Go Beavers!

This whole arms race becomes nonsense at some point.
How big does a weight room really need to be?
How much drier can one indoor practice facility keep you than another one?
How over-the-top does a locker room need to be?
How many seats with waiters and waitresses and overpriced luxury boxes and monster-sized scoreboards does your stadium need?
How much is enough? Even the "smallest" guy in an adult movie is a genetic freak.
At some point, we have to find the level we can realistically and sensibly compete at - athletically and financially - and stay there.
The new Hayward Field may be state of the art, but it has none of the charm, ambiance and attraction of the old building and in the end is a $250 million facility that sits empty, or half- or one-quarter filled, for 350 days of the year.

TTATT Court has all the soul of a Costco.

That point was in the rearview mirror a long time ago.
