Yeah............... DJU, great QB, the guy who got us to the 8-4, which would have been worse if not for him.
Okay.
He played 12 games. He threw for 50% or less in four of them, less than 55% in two more and had one more at 56%. That's seven of his 12 games in which the threw at 56% or less. That is an unreliable completion percentage. .
Was he terrible? No. He played fairly well to excellent i n most of our wins. But the good QBs play well in 9-12 games, not six.
Was he the reason we took a downturn in 2023? I wouldn't say that he was the only reason, but I am not sure I would call him too much of an upgrade. After all, the 2022 team had a better record and they were QB'd by the duo of Chance Nolan and Ben Gulbranson. How great was DJU?

No two ways around it. But Oregon State was better than San Diego State. DJU was 17/34 for 198 yards and a touchdown against Wazzu but one interception. Nine carries for 61 yards. 43 touches for 259 yards and two touchdowns. This is DJU's second- or third-worst game, and the offense scored 35 points! Anyway.......... 1st drive: DJU hit his only pass to Deshaun Fenwick for seven yards. Two subsequent running plays lost five yards.
2nd drive: Touchdown
3rd drive: Heneli Bloomfield and Joshua Gray each beaten like a drum. Jake Levengood should have helped but did not. Mad dash to DJU. DJU with no time gets hit as he throws and is picked off. He probably should have checked down to Jake Velling, who was wide open underneath. Velling might still be running. Well-designed play. Terrible blocking on the left side.
4th drive: Touchdown
5th drive: Oregon State gets the ball at the Wazzu 40 after a fumble. Martinez almost breaks off a big-gainer but is tackled by the last defender for a gain of one. DJU's third-down pass is batted at the line. Oregon State goes for it on fourth down. Wazzu puts nine on the line, daring a pass, but drops four of those into coverage. The six easily cover the three receivers. Levengood gets run over, barely slowing down his assignment. Levengood looked like he was expecting help from Tanner Miller, who blocked no one. Bloomfield also tries to block the guy who looks like he was spying Velling. Bloomfield blocks no one, as a result. DJU moves left to avoid the rusher that ran over Levengood but is sacked by the guy who beat Velling on the outside.
6th drive: Halftime.
7th drive: Two runs set up a third-and-four. DJU hits Silas Bolden for three. If Bolden could have broken that tackle, he might still be running. Fourth-and-one. Wazzu has seven on the line but only brings four, expecting pass. Sure enough, Smitty dials up a pass. Everyone blocks left, but it is a bootleg rollout to the right. The tight end (not Velling) misses his chip, leaving two completely unblocked on the right. DJU rolls into the teeth of two defenders and tries to loft one for Martinez to run under. Unfortunately, Martinez cut off the route. Martinez still almost adjusts to make the catch, but it is incomplete.
8th drive: After a first down, two incompletions. The third is a sack. Velling misses his block. The play looks like it is a designed flare or something like a lead pass to Fenwick. Fenwick has a step. It could have been a big gainer, if Velling had done just a bit more. Instead, it is a sack. Punt. No more sacks the rest of the way.
Wazzu utilizes the fake punt on the next drive and makes it 35-14.
9th drive: Touchdown.
10th drive: Touchdown.
11th drive: Touchdown. The onside kick fails. Game over.
