Former OSU safety and pro light heavyweight boxer Bo Marthaller passed away today after a serious car accident.
Thoughts and prayers with his wife and kids.

I used to love watching this fellow play on kick coverage. He was really tough and blew up lots of blockers in his day. Sorry to hear the news.

Played in the legendary 1998 Civil War win. He played in the 1997 Civil War, notching an interception, but he was hurt at the end of 1998 and missed that particular Civil War. He seemed like a guy that Riley liked that Erickson was not particularly high on.

They both mention Bo coming in as a substitute late in OT.

Condolences to his family. Worked out in the same gym for a few years back. He was a good man.

Terrance Carroll played all but one snap, and the FSNW crew indicated that third-string Aaron Wright played that one snap, not Bo. The Oregon State website indicates that Bo was hurt for the Civil War and did not play. I do not have Aune's call.

The Oregon State website indicates that Bo was hurt for the Civil War and did not play. I do not have Aune's call. To cut to the chase, you're probably right. But there is some conflicting evidence: 1. There were two TV broadcasts of that game. FSN National with Steve Physioc and Tom Ramsey and FSNW in Oregon with Scott Lynn, Todd McKim and Steve Preece. As you note, TC got injured in OT and was replaced for one play. Physioc/Ramsey say the replacement is Aaron Wright. Aune & Grimm/OSU Radio and McKim/FSNW say it's Marthaller. 2. The official bio for Marthaller says he was injured and did not play in 98 CW. It seems most likely, based on above that Aaron Wright was the substitute, not Marthaller and that Aune and FSNW TV could have been referencing a media guide roster while Physioc and FSN were (correctly) referencing a day-of-game lineup card with correct numbers. My assertion that Marthaller played was based on item 1 above but I think your evidence for Wright is stronger so thanks for helping to set the record straight. But most importantly, condolences and best wishes to Bo's family and loved ones. He was a great Beaver and part of the special group that ended the losing streak and turned OSU football around.

I agree 100%. Condolences and best wishes to Bo's family. Special kid. A guy who walked on, while Pettibone was coach. 1-10 his senior year of high school, 2-9 his true freshman year, 3-8 his redshirt freshman year, 5-6 his sophomore year, 7-5 his junior year, and 11-1 and Pac-10 and Fiesta Bowl Champions his senior year. He was a big part of turning that 1-10 team into an 11-1 team in a mere five years.
