I wish that I wasn't so technologically challenged, because I would have liked to have provided a link, but I am so I didn't.
ESPN has a really nice article about Riley the man, profiling his great character and love for the game, and how Husker players and fans are buying in to his leadership. The way that he deals with players and their families, his genuine concern for people. They specifically cite his dealing with the death of a player last summer, openness to people and the way that he dignified Brenda Tracy and used that sad situation to educate his players. They all point to a man of integrity who is real and unaffected by himself.
This in no way is a "Riley vs. Andersen" thing for me. I like and respect both men, and hope that they both have great success. It's not an attempt to suggest that the Huskers 7-0 start means that they are playoff material. They haven't played a heavyweight yet, and it's reasonable to think that they will lose at Wisconsin this weekend - maybe badly - and at Ohio State BIG the following week. I am not a huge believer in Banker's abilities, and Coach Riley's phenomenal loyalty to people is at once both an amazing virtue, yet potentially a fatal flaw in the dog-eat-dog reality of big-time college athletics.
What I do mean to articulate is that this article reminds me of why I have been and will always be a HUGE Mike Riley fan. He just gets it. He's far from a perfect coach, but he did some crazy great stuff for our program and is very good at what he does, and I believe there's room for truly nice guys to do well, even excel (Peterson at UW is another). Riley is the real deal - he may be corny, but you never have to wonder what he's really saying or doing when the camera isn't on him!

I hope he goes all the way this year, wins a natty, and pops off.
It would be fun to see aw-shucks Riley plunger super-serious Saban or Petersen.

I am a Riley fan. Leaving OSU was good for him and good for the beavs. The beavs needed new blood and he didn't have to be fired. It's been discussed many times but something intangible was missing during the end of his time at OSU. Recruiting was down, 2 star recruits weren't being coached up into 4 star level, and too many blowout losses where team was unprepared. Still strange to see him not wearing orange and black.

In his press conference: "Boy that sure was pretty neat wasn't it guys?" How are you going to celebrate Coach? "Boy I'll tell ya... I might just go a little crazy and have a REGULAR soda pop!"

NEWS FLASH: RILEY DUMPED OREGON STATE TWICE! THE NEBRASKA SITE IS ELSEWHERE! There's an old saying I find to be quite true. "The grass is greenest where you water it". After phase II of Reser we reduced the watering of the metaphorical grass of our football program yet demanded more. Riley marched on without a complaint for years(at least publicly) while watching the competition across the conference pumping more and more water onto their lawns. He always said he'd stay at OSU "as long as they'll have me" and "I feel like I can keep the program competitive". After meeting with BDC and listening to a growing vocal segment of the OSU base, he realized the time had come. Enough fans no longer wanted him, and without OSU investing a lot in a lot of fertilizer and water the grass was going to die. Nebraska's timing was perfect and Riley decided to go where he was wanted and where they water their grass.

NEWS FLASH: RILEY DUMPED OREGON STATE TWICE! THE NEBRASKA SITE IS ELSEWHERE! News Flash: Quizz, Steven Jackson, Brandin Cooks all "dumped us" to go take on a new challenge. Guess we need to stop following their careers and not appreciate them either. Only difference, those players didn't have people wanting then "fired" when they took the opportunity! Get off my lawn!

Another difference, those players were also NOT making ~$1.5 million a year at OSU. Your comparison is so "apple to oranges" it's laughable.

NEWS FLASH: RILEY DUMPED OREGON STATE TWICE! THE NEBRASKA SITE IS ELSEWHERE! And frankly it is more interesting to follow Nebraska Football than anything happening on Saturdays in Corvallis this year. I mean I don't really care if Neb wins or loses it has no real effect on me, but I have watched 4 complete games or so this season of Nebraska football to really 3 full OSU games and a few parts of some others. The games have mostly been close and come down to the 4th quarter. Neb has some interesting athletes. I still care more about the OSU win/loss, but the games are dreadfully boring and or depressing to actually watch. I like a defensive struggle as much as the next guy, but OSU offense is so cringe worthy this year I just won't subject myself to the train-wreck that is McGiven-Woods offense. And I am being generous when I say train wreck, because in my option at least a train wreck happens quickly. I have even made up new names for our no name offense after the Utah week; started calling it the RunNPoop or Spread Toxin (current favorite). I also considered Bear Bait (as the only team that has fallen for it) and the West Toast Offense (second runner up). IT BURNS, IT BURNS, -----IT HURTS MY EYES!

I didn't think it possible. But I'm a Nebraska fan. Go Big Red.
As for the Aw shucks Riley thing, the folksy down home character whom just happens to be a former NFL head coach, former CFL head coach, and Division I head coach for nearly 20 years. It's sorta like that line from Singles....I think that A you have an act, and B, not having an act, is your act. You watch him on TV or in a press conference and sorta think to yourself, I don't get it. But spend more than 10 minutes around the guy and Aw Shucks is nowhere to be seen. It's clear he is a commanding presence, he's confident, he's extremely respected by his peers, assistants, and players (or mostly). You don't last as long in his crazy biz not being that.
