Ahhh.. . you're smarter than that, Nfork. ANY mention here of Nebraska's HC, Mike Riley is a comparison to OSU's HC, Gary Andersen. IF MR has great success at UN...national championship or CLOSE....the argument that it isn't POSSIBLE in Corvallis is amplified, and even SOLIDIFIED in many minds. Any mention of MR and UN is comparative....by definition. Is your loyalty to OSU or MR? MR left OSU TWICE, of his own volition. Period. No?

Any mention of MR and UN is comparative....by definition. Is your loyalty to OSU or MR? MR left OSU TWICE, of his own volition. Period. No? Sure you can say he left us twice, that means he also chose us twice and he had other options. Erickson left us too, only difference is he never came back again other than when he came back on the ASU sideline at which time he did received cheers from Beaver Nation when introduced because the majority of Beaver fans were/are capable of being grateful for what he did for OSU and able to look past whatever it was he did after he left OSU. What's the difference here. MR gave OSU the most consistent success it's experienced in decades. DECADES. He made us a respectable program beyond the flash in the pan 2000 season. So why can't Beaver Nation be grateful to the man who gave us all that? Why can't I support OSU and GA and at the same time want MR to have his due. To go somewhere where he has a real chance to earn the credit he deserves in the coaching history books? To taste a higher level of success he came so close to tasting here. Can we not be loyal to OSU and also want to see a guy who poured everything he had into this program for years against a lot of odds finish out his career in a way few others have deserved more? It takes some small thinking to wish otherwise after all MR has done for OSU, Corvallis, and Beaver Football. Really small thinking. He's earned that chance. Should GA match or surpass the bar MR set, I'll happily wish the same for him someday as well.

Well, I feel in the same way that Green Bay Packer fans feel that Vince Lombardi is "their coach", even though he ended his career as the Washington Redskin's HC, Mike will always be "Head Coach" at Oregon State. And in a way, I think he still feels that he is too.
And personally, I see no real reason why both MR and GA can't both succeed to the highest level. Will take some breaks here and there, but its possible and certainly wishable.

This is How I see it. Mike Riley did a lot for OSU when they were really down like 28 years of down.He ran a clean program and had first winning season after 28 Years of many Coaches that failed. He was good for us and He Came back after trying the NFL in San Diego. We had another Coach who also Coached at San Diego, and UCLA. His name was Tommy Prothro. He also left never coming back but he brought us Joy. So did Mike Riley. The Civil War 1998, Greatest Game I have witnessed. He beat USC a few times in Corvallis. What I am saying is We cannot be so small as to not examine all the accomplishments of our Coaches. We shouldn't have guys bitching about Andersen or Riley,or Prothro. Those guys proved their Mettle while Here and produced elsewhere. I would throw Erickson into that mix as well. I also think Andersen has proven He can win before. I am willing to root for Him as I have for those other people I mentioned. Anything else is Small and Petty. So gain a little perspective. I will be there Tonight and in 30 Years I have missed 2 games. And I come from Washougal Washington.
