As I was going through the scores of the Pac-12 games this morning, a few stood out to me:
Utah beat ASU by 23. WSU beat Cal by 35. Stanford beat the ducks by 25 (and were up by 39 before backing off in the 4th quarter).
This made me wonder at what point in those games the fans of the losing team gave up hope. And that made me remember how few games last year had any hope for Beaver fans in the 4th quarter. And that, finally, made me understand that this year's team just won't let us give up.
At Minnesota: With 1:27 left in the game, the Beavers are driving for a potential game tying or game winning score. Idaho State: Beavers win by 30. Boise State: With 3:21 left in the game, the Beavers are doing an onside kick to try to continue an improbable comeback attempt. Cal: Fans are glued to their seats to see the Beavers win in overtime. Utah: With 37 seconds left, the Beavers are driving for the potential game-winning score. WSU: With 10:19 left, 5:57 left, and 0:04 left, the Beavers are driving for the potential game-winning score. At Stanford: As the third quarter winds down, the Beavers are scoring to cut Stanford's lead to a single score. At UCLA: With 5 minutes left in the game, the Beavers are driving for a potential game-tying or game-winning score.
Week after week, they refuse to give up and they refuse to let us give up. The TV announcers said last night that this Beaver team "always finds a way to keep fighting".
They want wins. We want wins. Of course we do. That's why we keep watching....as the Beavers get so close. "They just need to learn to win" sounds like a cop out, but it really seems to apply in this case.

I agree, this team is so close to finding a way to win! we have improved so much from last year! I love how this team keeps fighting! it brings a good smile to my face and makes me proud to be a die hard Beavers fan. One thing i've noticed is that the younger players that have replaced our injured starters, are doing one heck of a good job! they've impressed me! GO BEAVS!

I think our new DC had a huge impact (the Hawaii fans were right when they were sad to see him go). Give the man a raise! get a real OC and a couple more OL and hope that Luton is "the real deal"!!
we might just be a big surprise next season!

Don't really disagree, but it seems like folks are forgetting about Moran.

It's interesting to me those here that would discount the solid team-wide effort we are seeing now that was so lacking in the last few years of Riley. I guess old allegiances die hard.
But wow, the losing sucks but it is wonderful to see a team playing hard again.

Let's see what he says about your outrageous statement about a perceived lack in Riley's last couple years.

It actually has very little to do with comparing last years team. It just an observation that this team works really hard to win and has been close several times. I think most fans appreciate the effort.

Riley's last two years, the team was 12-13 (6-12 in conference) and won a bowl game. We gave up an average of 31.5 ppg on an average of about 420 ypg.
In our last two years we've gone 4-18 (1-15 in conference), giving up an average of about 35 ppg on an average of about 450 ypg.
That must mean Riley was an incredible coach that was able to win half his games with players playing at below maximum effort. He was able to beat Utah, Colorado 2x, Washington State, Cal, and 7th ranked Arizona State with players half assing it all over the place. Either that, or we had completely superior talent that was able to stay competitive despite other teams giving far superior efforts.
I think it's incredibly insulting to the players that were here those years to suggest that they weren't trying hard. Forget about who the coach was. Those kids put their bodies on the line week in and week out every Saturday in the fall, and you all are suggesting they weren't trying hard.

As for the actual original intent of the thread, the fact that we haven't been eviscerated by halftime in most of our games this year is certainly an improvement over last year. Getting better sure beats getting worse, but it's too bad we had to hit rock bottom for this to look like improvement, though.
