Pac-12 Network ran kind of a cool show yesterday where they identified the best male/female athlete, coach, and "pioneer" from each school. OSU's picks were:
Male Athlete: Terry Baker Female Athlete: Carol Menken-Schaudt Coach: Pat Casey Pioneer: Dick Fosbury
Probably no debate from anyone about the Pioneer and Female athlete, but I gotta admit, I was surprised the answer for coach wasn't Ralph Miller. Casey has definitely had more success in his sport, but when I think OSU coach, the very first thing that comes to mind is Ralph Miller. I'll admit, I just assumed Gary Payton would be the athlete, but Terry Baker is perfectly acceptable answer. Robin Reed could probably also be considered.

I think Carol got the nod due to the Summer Olympics participation... she is certainly a very GOOD choice, but what about Chari Knight from Gymnastics? 8 perfect 10.0 in her life, only the second woman EVER to post two in one meet, and she did that twice in her career. went to the NCAA championships 4 times and was a multiple placer in multiple events and all around. two time gymnast of the year, 3 time all pac 10 selection and hold like every OSU record on Bars and Beam. It is hard to argue with the Fosbury flop for Pioneer!!! I'll give you that. Other maybe not so obvious athlete choice: Les Gutches... absolutely dominate in his career. Coach? well, hard to argue with a 2x NC coach and multiple post season coach... But like you said, we have a court named after a pretty good one too.

Carol is tough to argue against, but I will go with a personal fav as she seemed to be unreal in any event she attempted...
Joy Selig-Peterson (1997) Joy Selig is arguably the best-ever gymnast at Oregon State University. She lettered from 1988-91, and was a seven-time All-American. She earned the NCAA title on the balance beam twice and once on floor exercise. She was named to the Pac-10 Conference Women's All-Decade Team in 1995 (all sports). She was the 1991 American Award recipient-given to the nation's top gymnast. Selig was a three-time Academic All-American. At the time of her graduation, she held the school record in the all-around, balance beam, and floor exercise. She was the NCAA Woman of the Year for Oregon and participated in the World University Games in 1991.
And although we've had some with more honors, I never saw a man instill fear into his opponents (even Gutches) like...
Howard Harris (1997) Howard Harris is one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of Oregon State University. He lettered from 1977-80. He was a four-time All-American at 190 pounds and heavyweight, including capturing the NCAA title in '80. He won three Pac-10 Conference titles. At the time of his induction he held the school record for career wins (169), ranked second for career falls (87), and first for single season falls (40, 1980). He posted a perfect 46-0 season in 1980, and during his career had a 47-match win streak. He helped OSU to four top-10 finishes at the NCAA Tournament.

I think these are great picks. I only have a couple thoughts:
Male Athlete: Someone mentioned Gary Payton as a possible choice and I might even consider it a toss-up, each essentially being POY in their respective sports. However, Terry Baker had a Final Four basketball appearance to go with his Heisman, so he gets the nod.
There have been many great wrestlers at OSU, and although he was a bit before my time, I have to pick Robin Reed. Along with his many accomplishments the guy never lost a match, even while often competing above his weight class. That's insane.
I'd never actually cast a vote for him above these other standouts, but as a track fan there is a special place in my heart for Dale Story, who won a National Championship for the Beavers in cross country running barefoot. Until Baseball won back to back titles, that cross country team was OSU's only national championship winning team. (I mostly bring him up because some Beaver fans don't know this interesting fact!)
Pioneer: IMO Fosbury as pioneer can't be argued. He was not only the best of his time in his prime, he completely changed the sport of high jumping.

I was around for Chari but heard stories about Joy Selig. She was one step better than Chari, and Chari was damn good!

Watching bits and pieces of this show is fascinating... freaking love the history of sport. Could not get enough of Jim Thorpe, Tom Harmon, etc stories/movies. But, what hits me is how GREAT the Pac12 schools have been in almost every avenue of athletics and academics. I'd buy DVD of that series. I will set the dvr to hopefully catch all 12 schools.

Ah, gymnastics. I attended school when we had Pettibone and Jimmy Anderson. If it wasn't for gymnastics, I wouldn't have had anything to cheer for while attending OSU (though Brent Barry was fun to watch). I attended way more gymnastics meets than football games. Loved watching Chari Knight...
GO BEAVS!

And he pinned his way through the NCAA tournament on way to his 1980 Heavyweight Championship. Nobody has duplicated that feat at nationals since.
