..the victim?
I'm honestly curious to know. Because I'm drawing a blank.

It may say that it protects future victims by shining a light on the offender but I say that's horseshlt.

It may say that it protects future victims by shining a light on the offender but I say that's horseshlt. It's as if juvenile offenders, having served their sentence and gotten square with the justice system, are not allowed to experience any success that could possibly place them in a positive light. They must be seen in public as 2-dimensional villains forever. But is that truly in the best interests of the victim?

In the Oregon Live comments the OregonLive comment editor facilitator dude kept saying that the MOTHER of the victim wanted the article published to give her (the mother or the girl?) a "voice" whatever that means...
I have no doubt that the MOTHER in her short sightedness and renewed (thanks for bringing it up, Danny) anger and ire (which don't get me wrong is justified) enjoyed the article for about 10 minutes... until the emails, texts and tweets started pouring in and her daughter had to stop going to school (I am guessing and projecting, but middle schoolers are incredibly apt at putting 2 and 2 together to find four and they do NOT care one iota how sensitive the info is they will be cruel with it)...
In an eye for an eye, empty vengeance way this may have brought some catharsis to the mother, maybe a release or a better sense of justice... for the girl that "Barely remembers" what happened? I can't imagine this did anything but harm... Even if they moved to the east coast and changed their names and no one knows who they are, having that memory reopened and reinforced (thanks for the graphic details you wouldn't include in any OTHER report of rape, even for an adult, Danny...) is surely NOT what the doctor ordered...
I am still VERY mixed on Luke, on Pat, on OSU, and on how all of this was or should or could have been handled... The one thing I AM SURE of is that this was a CRIME and a NEW ABUSE against the poor girl... My heart breaks for her that it happened initially and my heart continues to break for her as the Oregonian just molested her again...

It may say that it protects future victims by shining a light on the offender but I say that's horseshlt. It shines a light on the offender to ensure that he does no more damage. It also helps to ensure that it does not happen again. There are a lot of gaps here that need to be filled in, in order to get the whole story. To that end, I am waiting on anyone at Oregon State to step up and say something that makes me rethink my position, but I have not heard it yet. The silence from Oregon State's side is deafening.
