I turn on my old pc (a Dell if it matters), and then I turn on the monitor.
I get a display on the monitor that says "Message: Monitor in energy saver mode. Activate with pc."
Only problem is no amount of key-pressing, mouse-clicking, or threats of physical violence toward the computer do anything.
Any ideas?

Hmmmmmmmm.
Most of the time... and I say this as a non-IT guy you don't touch the monitor's power button. The monitor should turn on and off with the PC.

It probably means something to the effect of your system is not functioning there for the monitor is not getting a signal. It probably means that you need a new computer or major repairs which will cost 10 to 50 times as much as the value of your old Dell. Any computer 6 years or older is one that I call a $5 computer; give me $5 and I will take it from you. That's how fast things change in this business and how cheap computers that are so much more powerful than those available six years ago are.

Any ideas? This message can be interpreted two ways: 1. The computer isn't "talking" to the monitor. This could simply be a problem with the cable that connects the two. Check it on both ends and make sure it is snugly fit. This is probably the most common and also the easiest solution. 2. The monitor isn't receiving anything from the computer because there is a problem with the computer. This can be more complicated. However, it could simply be that the computer isn't getting powered on. So check that the computer itself is up and running. Hold the power button to kill the power to it, wait 30 seconds, and then push the power button again. You should hear the computer working and you may see a button light up on the computer. If the cord is snug and the computer starts up properly, and you still get the monitor error, then there's a problem in the software (probably) or firmware with your set up. These are harder to troubleshoot on your own, especially without a monitor. But hopefully, one of the two options above will get you going again.
