I've seen some folks saying that in Mike Leach's and Mike MacIntyre's third year, their teams were somewhere between poor to bad also. True – the records were not good. I want to dig a little bit and look at the points and the yards for those teams and compare it to OSU.
WSU
Mike Leach
Year 2012 2013 2014
Record 3-9 6-7 3-9
Points 20.4 31.0 31.8
Points Allowed 33.7 32.5 38.6
Total Offense (yards) 360 421 518
Total Defense (yards) 426 458 442
Colorado
Mike MacIntrye
Year 2013 2014 2015
Record 4-8 2-10 4-9
Points 25.4 28.5 24.6
Points Allowed 38.3 39.0 27.5
Total Offense 370 439 397
Total Defense 468 461 417
OSU
Gary Andersen
Year 2015 2016 2017
Record 2-10 4-8 1-3
Points 19.0 26.2 24.8
Points Allowed 37.0 30.5 47.5
Total Offense 337 366 356
Total Defense 482 429 486
You can draw your own conclusions. Mine is that looking at the respective year 3's, WSU would be favored by three touchdowns over us and Colorado would be favored by two touchdowns.

Some reasons why this comparison really isn't very valid. One the PAC 12 overall has been stronger and weaker through those different periods so a better record could be deceptive. But those stats can't really convey how competitive each team was. I remember both WSU and Colorado getting better each season. They didn't take steps backwards from a competitive standpoint. with each season, both Colorado and WSU played opponents better each year, win or lose! Lastly, Oregon State hasn't finished the 3rd season yet. Unfortunately, at this point, I can't see them winning another game.
The most consistent coach at staying competitive in EVERY game over the past 4 or 5 years in my eyes is Mike Leach. He's weird! He's goofy! But you don't see WSU teams getting blown out too often (if ever!). They are in most, if not all games until the end.
Go Beavs!

Hey, if Andersen manages to only lose 9 games like those programs I'll give him a 4th year (ignoring that overall he'd still have less wins through 3 years than those guys); I'm betting he fails to meet even that target.

The thing about Leach's record for this first three season at WSU
2012 - Win against #25 Washington, and won on the road at UNLV 2013 - Won at USC who finished #19, won at Arizona who finished with winning record, and another road win at Cal 2014 - Won at Utah who finished #21
So far, Andersen's performance for his first three seasons is comparable to MacIntrye's, except that Mac defeated his in-state rival twice in three years (still plausible), and won on the road in his third season (still plausible). Unfortunately it was against OSU.
I would say using Leach as an example is out of the question, since Andersen has yet to beat a team that is ranked, finished ranked, on the road, or finish with a winning season. If we're to use Mac's turnaround as something for OSU to look towards, our defense would need to be Junior heavy right now with no early NFL departures, and for Kevin Clune to have a clue like Jim Leavitt does.

Colorado beating CSU is hardly like OSU beating Oregon. It's more like OSU beating some Mountain West team (which CSU is).

He also shares the distinction of having lost to (2) Big Sky teams.

I'm not a huge WSU homer but I will give credit where it's due! He's a very good football coach IMO. Go Beavs!

you guys. Enough with the “he lost to Big Sky teams” nonsense. Neither Washington State or Oregon State can hope to get the kind of athletes where you can just roll the ball out and chalk up wins regardless. If players have off days, they kind of just have to buckle up and hope for the best. Again, Leach has posted very successful seasons in Lubbock, Texas and Pullman, Washington. He was the offensive coordinator for one of the best teams ever to play in Lexington, Kentucky. The day after he upsets a top five team that is college football royalty, all you can say is “yeah, but he lost to Portland State?”
Thank God Andersen is 3-0 vs. Big Sky teams. The man can really coach.

Who is Colorado's rival then? It used to be Nebraska Nebraska's rival was Oklahoma. After the Big 12 went to North-South, they cobbled together a Colorado-Nebraska "rivalry."
