That was probably the best thing that ever happened in Erickson's career. He would have a complete rebuilding job with the Beavs, and I personally do not think he would have been successful. If he was hired in '84, we most likely would not have that great Fiesta Bowl. Maybe better, maybe worse. Who knows??

So....Wilky...you're saying we have (NO) a chance at a decent season? I didn't think so...;-) My God. I can't BELIEVE I'm talking about Joe Avocado...with MELANCHOLY, like it was yesteryear........Judas Priest!! Fertig was a schmoozer...Avezzano, a ...I dunno... Pettibone and Kragthorpe were good peeps (but BAD D1 head coaches), DE is a unique guy with a BRIGHT, but SHORT-LIVED FLAME (not sure how else to say it).....and Riley WAS a helluva coach and IS ahelluva guy. Andersen? Damn...I wish I knew. I don't. Regarding Joe...The first time I saw him was in Depot Bay. I had read about the hire, and saw his photo in the paper...remember those? Anyways...my lovely wife and I (and our kids...you know them..) were in one of those cheezy Depot Bay shops (my apologies to any OWNER of one...IF you're a Beav), and in walks this REAL tan feller with a big damn cowboy hat, and a "gal" with really, really, really, REALLY big friggin' hair, lotsa face paint, and tight jeans (before there was any such THING as tight jeans), and...I swear to the good Lord....I told my wife, "THAT is the new Beaver head coach..." She said, "NO WAY!" I said, "Oh yeah...WAY." "s%#t." I just KNEW what we were in store for. That's a TRUE story.

Erickson took a 3-7-1 Washington State team and turned them into a 9-3 team in two years, the Cougars' best season in 56 years. Washington State won its first bowl game in 73 years. The Cougars upset Troy Aikman's #1 UCLA in the Rose Bowl, Washington State's only ever win over a #1 team. There is no doubt that 1984 Oregon State was worse than 1986 Washington State, but Erickson was in his prime well into the early 2000s. Even Kragthorpe was able to take Oregon State to a 4-6-1 record in four years, the Beavers' best record in 17 years.

As inept as GA is he seems ten times more credible as a human being than Joe A.

Dee wanted to hire Dennis.Told him he had the job. Byrne kiboshed the hire because of Dennis' "reputation" ( i e, he liked to drink beer), which Byrne didn't like after Joe A. So Bryne hired Kragthorpe instead. Solid hire at the time, but Dave was no Dennis Erickson.

So Bryne hired Kragthorpe instead. Solid hire at the time, but Dave was no Dennis Erickson. When Oregon State hired him, Dave had been out of football since 1982 in the AD's office of Utah State. It was a dopey hire then. The Washington State newspaper mocked Oregon State for it. (And rightfully so, Washington State went 5-0 against Oregon State under Kragthorpe.) The other thing that people do not bring up enough is that Mike Price was at Weber State at the time. Erickson and Price were on everyone's radar, except Byrne's, who knew better. When Washington State hired a new head coach in 1986, Erickson got the job. Price was the other finalist. When Erickson moved on after the 1988 season, Price got the job.

Even Kragthorpe was able to take Oregon State to a 4-6-1 record in four years, the Beavers' best record in 17 years. I liked Erickson, he was a pretty good coach and was fun on the 19th hole, but he was not a program builder. When he arrived at wasu he inherited the RPM back field. Rypin, Mays and I forget who the "P" was, and a pretty good OL. I don't think many of HIS recruits hit the field before he left for his biggest stage. Great guy, but a medium + coach. He had uncanny timing. He always left a program (college) at the right time, for Dennis. I don't particularly like them but, Coaches like Meyer, Sabin and very few others could come to Corvallis and build a winning program. All they need is money and for people to just get out of their way and leave them alone. Eventually there will probably be sanctions but, you get what you pay for.

Mark Rypien's last season was in 1985, before Erickson was hired. Mayes was in the same class as Rypien. Porter was a year behind. His last year was Walden's last year. Erickson did not coach any of the three.
