A healthy secondary and there's room for optimism. The offense however is a mess. I'd advocate starting AP the rest of the way. He doesn't screw around and hits the hole fast and hard. Can't help thinking if Luton was playing today we'd have had a chance. Punter is good. Kicking isn't. A guard (64?) forgot he was on the fg team. Comes in late, timing messed up, botched snap, missed fg. All that stuff matters. O line still doesn't look like they're getting any real push. Very disappointing. I'm interested to see how we play against the lower half of the PAC. Hoping for the best, not expecting much.
Btw, put the new Col Sanders down as someone I'd like to punch.

I've postured all year we will "fall" into another W or two vs the tail end of the schedule. My issue, will that be a good thing??? |

I don't think there is a great team in the Pac-12 this year. IMO SC would get routed by an Alabama or Clemson. Darnold has the physical tools to make a good NFL QB but he has not looked that good this year. It kind of felt like SC was going through the motions today. The OSU Defense did look better but I don't think our offense can score enough to win a game unless we get a bunch of breaks.

128th in scoring defense - allowing an unfathomable 45 points per game
122nd in total defense
105th in rushing defense
121st in pass defense
129th in opponent third down conv %
99th in red zone TD %
All but rushing defense is ranked significantly worse than 2016.

Someone who gets it! I didn't watch the whole game but saw pieces of it and have seen USC a few times this season. Although USC is talented, they are not nearly as good as advertised. I think the average fan watches and sees that a team isn't scoring every possession and calls that improvement but you have to honestly ask; Is the other team's offense really that effective? (SC has not beat anyone by a large margin this season, they show no real explosiveness on offense in my opinion). Are some plays lucky? Quite often you will see guys out of position on our defense and sometimes it's in the deep secondary and then there's a missed throw or a drop, that is not good defense that's pure luck! Is the other team careless with the ball? I saw a fumble that looked like just a really bad job of ball security on the SC ball carrier's part. My biggest issues are the; playing out of position (pre and post snap- being outflanked to losing contain). The fact that it is taking multiple defenders to bring down ball carriers consistently. Some assignments that are basic football ( "trail" player in a basic pursuit drill missing and we get beat by a scrambling QB or a misdirection play! Players following footpath instead of taking good angles ahead of the BC to make the tackle. Then there's the tackling, yikes! I'm not saying the offense is good, I'm saying that people keep making it sound like the offense is the only problem here and it's not! Go Beavs! |

We may be 128th in scoring defense .... but we're only 116th in ypp defense. I'm still looking for those numbers to improve as the schedule softens.

115th in scoring offense
117th in total offense
102nd in rushing offense
94th in passing offense
109th in passer rating
75th in third down conv %
39th in red zone %
41st in sacks allowed per game

OSU's 2017 defense is not only one of the worst in OSU history but also in FBS history. Through 6 games, OSU has allowed 270 points. for comparison, the Fiesta Bowl team gave up 212 points in 12 games. The 2012 team allowed 268 points in 13 games.
The highest point totals allowed for OSU was 469 points in 11 games back in 1981 - at the height of OSU football futility. The 2017 team is on track to give up 540 points in 12 games. To put that number in perspective, the FBS record is 572 points in 13 games by East Carolina in 2010. That is 44 points per game. OSU's current rate of surrendering points is 45 points per game - that's national record territory.
Opposing coaches are seeing how bad OSU really is on the game film and are using vanilla game plans and play calling. UW did that last week and USC called off the dogs early this week.

It was like a 'practice' (que up AI) where they could hit someone else besides friends. The embarrassing part to me, even when they danced on our turf it showed they cared enough to show us up. Saturday it was more lethargic apathy. BUT... the x pt snapper got in another game, so we're "sportsmen" and classy! Like GAG could control the score getting out of hand to be that "classy". |

Whoa, folks! I never said we looked like a Rocky Long defense, just that we looked better in the last couple weeks. Having all those players out of the secondary is certainly not helping. Yes, we suck! Yes, statistically we're awful! I agree, and believe it or not 92, I "get it". But the defense is starting to look better to the eyeball test. The offense? Not so much. In fact, it's going the other way. All my opinion of course!

When you can pick up 4th and 10 by simply making an audible and running off tackle why queue up anything cute? You can beat OSU with a vanilla game plan because we get beat in the most fundamental manner. our DL is blown off the line and our LBs are not in their spots. An straight forward diet of downhill running with a little play action mixed in is good enough for 45 points on our boys. That is the hard truth. We look good in the first half because teams are patient on us. They know it is just a matter of chipping away. our offense can't score, any lead is a safe lead. More importantly they know once they do score and push that lead up to 2 scores or so, OSU mails it in. |
