I got a robocall at home today from Coach Smith, asking me to consider purchasing season tickets for the upcoming season. I haven't had season tickets since the 2010 season. My friend I had four seats with for the prior decade dropped out prior to that season because his kids has sports on Saturdays. Got my wife to stick it out with me for one year by moving up to the club seats, but she doesn't really like football and was bored just hanging out with me. And tailgating sucks when its just two people. Seeing us win only twice in 2011 made it seem like great timing. So, I like the fact that they are reaching out to former donors, trying to pull us back into the fold. However, I HATE HATE HATE robocalls! Also, the fact that they didn't provide a way to remove my number from their list annoys me further! Apparently this is a standard Beaver thing and I'm a standard Beaver fan. Even when they do something I like I still hate it.

Problem with a robocall approach is the reputation of the robocall itself. The tendency is to ignore the ones you receive because they are generally annoying in nature, so even a well-meaning one like this ends up in the File 13 of both your phone and your mind.
I think it would go much further to place direct and personalized phone calls to a select group of former donors asking them to renew their support. You would get much more out of it just by the word-of-mouth operation the fan would engage in with his friends.
Coach Smith and the staff obviously couldn't do this all the time. But it could be a small part of the process of selling Smith's vision to those in the Beaver community in the same manner as speaking engagements and media interviews conducted around the state.

I think Coach Smith going door to door asking for renewals would be the most effective personally. But I'd rather he focus that time and energy on recruiting/hiring. I will not in any way be offended if Coach Smith takes advantage of modern technology to reach me and thousands of others to get his message out in a much more efficient manner.

The rest of us would come on this board and be like "WTF? What makes those guys so special that they get a call! OSU is just pandering to the rich guys and forgetting about Joe Beaver who buys two tickets in section 9!" Then you've got a whole new problem on your hands. I think the biggest issue is that the robocall sounds like it was hastily produced, Coach Smith had none of the confidence and assuredness in his voice that he displayed during his press conference, and his message was far too long. I got bored quickly and the fight song in the background actually made it more difficult to focus on what he was saying. If you're going to do something like this, it should be done right. I've got no problems with them using a prerecorded message to reach out....just do it better.

My call lasted less than a minute, and he seemed very enthused. Maybe he did call me personally.

No robocall for us. Of course if we don’t recognize a phone number, we don’t answer, so I suppose we could have received one and just don’t know it!
