The Petras news was a gut-punch, but as I mentioned yesterday, the way that Nemec talked about him made me wonder whether he knew it was coming. It’s a fact that OSU football is reeling from a combination of things that don’t need to be rehashed - it is what it is right now, and I believe that it’s unrealistic to expect an immediate resuscitation. I’m behind JS all the way and optimistic about what we can become. I’m just disheartened when I hear that this might be a 3 or 4 year rebuild. The optimist in me just hates the thought of it taking that long to be relevant again, but the realist in me wonders if that might not be the case after all.
I’m ready for some good news. Losing the highest-rated guy in this committed class is a bit deflating, but we’re Beavers and know the meaning of resilience. It would be so cool to hear about a couple of game-changers, real foundation pieces for a new direction for our program, surprising everyone and choosing in December or February to play for the Beavs. Not to disparage the kids that are apparently committed (although I’ll wait until the ink on the LOIs dry to count them), or imply that 3 star athletes can’t become outstanding players at the next level, or suggest that JS and his staff won’t get the most out of their kids. It would just do my heart good to hear of some pleasant surprises. I don’t have to see a bowl-bound team in one or two years to be encouraged, but even a few indicators that we’re getting better will do wonders for me.
I choose to see the enthusiasm for JS on the part of some of our most promising returning players and virtually all of the rest of our previous verbals, as well as the hiring of a strong group of offensive coaches as positive signs. Perhaps the next one will be the announcement of some strong teachers and recruiters for our defensive staff. Whatever it is, I’m ready for more than a JS robocall to get the excitement going.
