When looking at the Beavers overall team stats last season, there is obviously a lot things that were glaringly bad. What surprised me was the TOP. What is your opinion as to the main reason why OSU had the ball nearly as much as their opponents...yet yielded such large discrepancies in other categories? pac-12.com/content/football-statisticsSorry....the link goes to a previous page. Click on 2017, and then on OSU.

TOP is a somewhat meaningless stat since it can be manipulated. A better stat is plays run vs. plays against. We most of time milked the clock down to the last few seconds every play to shorten the game. Many teams ran up tempo against us and could run three plays in the time that we took to run one play.

When you run the ball a lot and the other team can score in just a couple plays... You are GOING to win TOP, and lose the game VERy very badly...
case in point:
69-10
TOP ucks: 30:20 Beavs: 29:40
So almost exactly even in TOP, but you remember the game... TOP was meaningless...
TOP became an in vogue stat in the late 90's when teams like the Denver Broncos were running the ball down people's throats in soul crushing 10 minute long TD drives, but in todays quick strike hurry up no huddle world TOP is almost a negative stat...

Time of Possession is a decent statistic, if you are running a similar offense to your opponent. Average plays/game: Oregon State: 64 Opponents: 72
Average yards/play:
Oregon State: 5.2 Opponents: 6.9
Turnovers:
Oregon State: 28 Opponents: 14
National Statistics:
Yards/rush:
Offense: 4.0 (88th) Defense: 5.5 (123rd)
Passing efficiency:
Offense: 117.2 (107th) Defense: 159.9.5 (124th)
Sacks: 14 (119th)
As feared, the defense was still terrible. 120th. A mere five years ago, Oregon State's defense was the 16th-best in the country. Ten years ago, Oregon State's defense was the best in the country.
The offense was 105th. Four years ago, Oregon State's offense was 27th. Eight years ago, Oregon State's offense was 11th.

I swear the QA era of Beaver football will be responsible for shorting my life by at least a decade.... Humperdinck shouldn't have spent all that time and money on "The Machine"... He should have just had Wesley meet QA, smh #PrincessBrideReferenceFTW

To be fair to GAG, I think that we was saying 30 turnovers and 30 sacks including 2016's 20 turnovers and 18 sacks. Think of it, 34 turnovers and 32 sacks over two years! GAG did it! As points of comparison, Oregon State's defense in 2012 finished with 31 turnovers and 28 sacks in a single year. In 2007, Oregon State's defense finished with 34 turnovers and 44 sacks.
