Wow! Sounds like a nice get! That Boss family had some exceptional athletes. I knew about Terry's brother, Kevin, being in the NFL, but didn't realize there was another professional sports playing family member, that's pretty cool.
I guess OSU is fully in the "BRING 'EM HOME" mode... which honestly I think is a good idea and am excited about. Seriously how many head coaches or assistants either played at OSU or grew up in Oregon/NW with a VERY good idea what being an athlete/coach in the PNW is like...
Off the top of my head (OK, I lied after I got going I ended up looking up each head coach ):Scott Rueck -- OSU Alum, been in Oregon pretty much his whole life
Pat Casey -- Born in Oregon, lived here pretty much his whole life, Got a degree from George Fox in "Interdisciplinary Studies" i.e. sports
Jonathan Smith -- Famous OSU alum and athlete.
Terry Boss -- Born and raised in Philomath, most likely grew up a Beaver fan, Coached here as an assistant for a season
Jon Reehoorn (golf HC) -- More of a Washington State guy, but still lived in the PNW his whole life
Kate Maxim (Rowing) -- Coached as an assistant with OSU before going to Princeton and then coming back, married to an OSU alum and former athlete
Linus Rhode (Soccer) -- Grew up in BC, and has been coaching soccer in Eugene or Corvallis for the past 19 years, this will be his 9th as the HC.
Not really from the PNW, and didn't have a previous connection, but they are definitely "Home" and tenured:Tanya Chaplin (Gym) -- Wow! She has been here 21 years, doesn't really matter where she was from Originally (Missouri -> UCLA -> OSU), she is a Corvallian!
Jim Zalesky (Wrestling) -- From Iowa... but he has been here for 12 years now. Similar to Tanya, I think we can consider him as being "Home"
Mark Barnard (Volleyball) -- Originally from Australia, but served as an assistant for 11 years at OSU before getting promoted to the HC job...
The only head coaches who are really "Transplants":Wayne Tinkle -- Montana isn't really the PNW...
Gabe Winkler (rowing) -- From the east coast
Louie Quintana (Track and field, CC) -- Villanova to ASU to here
Dawn Shockley (Golf) -- From Denver, CO
Laura Berg (Softball) -- From Southern California
Jennifer Buffin (Swimming) -- From California (hired by Stansbury)
Seriously almost every head coaching bio, especially the coaches Barnes has hired (more of them than I thought!) has a quote similar to this: "We're excited to bring Coach xxxx back to Oregon State to represent Beaver Nation". It is clearly a theme they are pursuing.
Those Transplants better watch out.... What is Gary Payton doing these days... does he have any coaching aspirations? Maybe Brent Barry???
