Here's an abbreviated version. Was asked about the nuts and bolts of of the defense, his philosophy and scheme. Says he has 4 core principles that will be the emphasis of his defense and all practices. 1. Ball pursuit, wants to be best ball pursuit d in the country. 2. Block destruction, will emphasize and teach defenders how to take on and defeat blocks. 3. Tackling, will be a daily emphasis in every practice 4. Take aways, whether that be turnovers or 3 and outs getting the ball out of the other team's hands will be an emphasis of his defense Says there's no magic scheme, need to be excellent at the fundamentals no matter what scheme is run so fundamental drills and skill building will be where the main practice emphasis will be placed. He will coach Outside LB's and Brey will coach the Inside backers. Was grateful JS agreed that him staying with his Wiscy players and finishing the season with them in the bowl game was the right thing to do. Made me wonder if JS wished he could have coached in the Fiesta Bowl. Entirely different scenario than Tibesar's since JS is the HC and UW is not only a conference foe but a division foe at that. Wonder if that option was ever even discussed between him and CP? This is everything a starved Beaver fan needs to hear. The last regime apparently believed fundamental football got in the way of the process and big boy pant wearing. That all you needed was to squat 500 pounds and run around the field laying wood. It is going to be so amazing to watch a defense that can keep it's feet, square up, wrap up. I will say. ugh. 3-4 it appears.... lame. But I will choose to believe we have the teachers in JS and Timmy T (I just made that nickname up) to be good at it. We had this conversation before, but when you lack the beef on the line to run a 3-4, you make up for it with complex scheming from the LBs. I think we have the teachers and the brains to make that a reality. Couldn’t agree more about the fundamentals. When I watch virtually every successful (as in playing division and league titles or better) the common thread is fundamental soundness. We have been horrible - especially on D - in that department the past few years. That had become a problem with Banker’s defenses the last couple of years before CGA and his merry men arrived. Fundamentals have got to be a priority, particularly when your 11 may not line up equal athletically to an opponent. That’s even true when you can match talent with the other guy. Something that teams like Wisconsin, Stanford and even Utah the poor man’s Wisconsin or Stanford) always seem to do is play defense the right way. Of course a major reason that Bama keeps hanging up banners is that their defensive personnel are ridiculously gifted, but they are also lights out in terms of fundamentals. Nobody will confuse the Jimmy’s and Joe’s for the Badger, Tree or Ute defenses with the guys playing for the Tide (they all have a 4 star or two, but make a living with 3 star kids just like the Beavs) but I love watching those other 3 schools play D. It is very rare for their players to not break down and contain runners, completely stifling YAC. The players get off blocks, pursue the ball like demons, and wrap up when they make contact with ball carriers. The result is very few big plays and a lot of time in the whirlpool for opponents. I would submit that there is minimal difference between the Beavs and Utes in terms of talent level RIGHT now. Utah has more depth to be sure, but the real difference, IMO, is that the Ute players are so well-versed in the fundamentals and their identity and trust in the system is so much clearer. Given that and the abysmal offensive dynamics in Salt Lake, I see no reason why the Beavs can’t compete and start to consistently win 6-8 games a year in the near future. That’s not my ceiling for our program, but getting to bowl games consistently again is my primary order of business as a fan right now.

Forgot one thing - Jon Warren is still unbearable. Absolutely unbearable. Did he try to slip by a let-up pitch? Maybe he was still admiring Diamond Bowl.

AKA JayBird. Warren was more: "0-2, full count pitch...CRUSHED TO DEEP LEFT CENTER!!! IT'S GONE!! Oh no.. caught by the right fielder." I make fun, but I'd be a terrible announcer.

No one is as bad as the 'uck homer Jerry Allen. Unbearable to try and follow a football game with him, "...the pass is inter-complete!". And every running play for the home team is one step from breaking it for a TD.

If you trusted Jerry Allen and his yardage calls, you'd think the field was 160 yards long, EVERY pass by uck opponents was "almost intercepted", and the refs cheat their runners out of 3-4 yards every time they spot the ball.

I really don't mind homerism; it's a fact of colleges that have their sports announcers, but when you add a lack of talent to that, it becomes unlistenable. With Allen, I could not tell what was happening most of the time except at the beginnings of plays when he remembered to announce the down and yardage.
Terrible. Just terrible.

"It's 3rd and 4, Stewart up the middle for three yards and a first down!". What? Lol

He's awful. Rarely gives times or score, once in a while he'll throw in the down and distance but half the time it's wrong. He doesn't paint a picture of the field at all. It's really bad. And I'm not saying that just because of who he is announcing either. He's just not very good at it. Not to mention the constant "And it's caught! Touchdown Oregon! No wait! Intercepted going the other way! No, just incomplete. My bad Jorgy." Tune into Parker and within a minute you'll know the down and distance, the score, the quarter, and time left. Half the time with Allen you have to wait until a commercial break and sometimes he doesn't even give it then.

My favorite part of an 'uck broadcast is the color guy crying "JEEEERRRRRRYYYY......THAT WAS A HORIBLE CALL" only to be followed a few plays later by "JEEEERRRRRRRRYYY.........THAT WAS A HORIBLE SPOT"
Always know when my 2nd. favorite team is doing well by listening to that guy.
Go Beavs!!

Forgot one thing - Jon Warren is still unbearable. Absolutely unbearable. I have absolutely no idea how Parker has put up with him so long. Jon must be fast on the getting Mike's coffee part I hardly tune in but if Mike is off I have to turn away They seem to genuinely like each and have been together a long time. I think the exasperating thing about Warren is that while Parker is self-deprecating, Warren has a need to build himself up. He often fudges on his athletic prowess and Parker seems to humor Warren and tolerate his proclivities. And, they are bible buddies. There is that. Parker mostly keeps it on the down low, Warren not so much.
