Going off current roster and listed position, on paper we have some good sized backers. It will be interesting to see how these players are placed by the new coaches in the new defense.
Willis with his explosiveness and speed is one example who seems like a much better fit for OLB where his explosiveness can be used to blitz from the edge. Add that to his size and he seems out of place at inside backer to me.
In the thread about Tibesar/Joe Beaver show seastape posted a link about the Steeler's 3-4 base defense(must read by the way) after Tibesar mentioned that's what ours will look like. One interesting thing in that article was a constant theme that one of the Steeler's underlying goals was to get the 7 best defenders on the field at the same time in the 3-4 and doing that might mean bucking some traditional ideas of what a standard fit is for a certain position. I'm pretty excited to see how this unfolds and where guys are used.
Any thoughts on where you see some moves being made?
OLB: 6' 2" 235 Sr. Ugwoegbo 6' 3" 215 So. Whetzel 6' 1" 233 Jr. Smith 6' 1" 225 Sr. Soesman 6' 2" 238 R-So. Unutoa-Whitson 6' 4" 238 R-So. Rashed Jr.
DE: 6' 7" 241 R-Fr. Bush 6' 2" 270 Jr. Katoa 6' 4" 240 R-Fr. Anderson 6' 3" 285 Sr. Williams
ILB: 6' 1" 235 Sr. Willis 6' 2" 227 So. Taumoelau 6' 2" 243 Jr. Hughes-Murray 6' 0" 233 R-So. Leonning 6' 1" 239 R-Fr. Robinson 6' 0" 227 Jr. Hunt
EDIT: Missed 3 players listed simply as "LB".
6' 0" 220 So. Ah-Hoy 6' 3" 212 R-Jr. Carroll 6' 1" 221 R-Fr. Skelton

Just realized Ricky Liuchan is not on the current roster. Did I miss something? Some Gary Andersen bulls%#t. Ricky and Isaac Garcia were removed from the Roster this past summer with no explanation given. There is no reason that I can find readily.

They likely only defined their relationship with the "process" as acquaintance. Work colleagues at best. They didn't fully respect it. They were not besties with the "process".

I thought Liuchan was put back on the roster at a later time, but I'm still not sure he was "really" on the roster. I'm pretty sure he did not play.

He was a greyshirt to begin with... but Issac Garcia is a mystery. the only comment I could find was him denying it was grades, but offering nothing else.

There was a tweet on Garcia's account from Jan 7th in response to someone who apprears to be a Beaver fan- Sounds like he and Kenny Turnier left messages for the new staff.

Speaking of roster stuff- did I miss this? Sounds like Christian Wallace is back/never left? Also some twitter speculation that he's moving to RB.

Turnier has offers from Buffalo, FIU, Toledo, Hawaii and Indiana. Visiting Toledo 1/19, Indiana 1/26. I'm guessing our current DL coach is well aware of him.

Garcia was attending Arizona Western in 2017 & hoped to get back to D1 in '18. Indiana offered him on Jan 3 '18, this from his twitter account.

Well if he's really bad at backpedaling and really good at running forward, this appears to be a win-win. Look at our new staff already playing to players strengths!

Liuchan never left last summer, that was false information. We did know something was brewing though as he is gone now. Unutoa-Whitson was already slated to move to DE. That will probably still happen as he was been working on his body to be ready for the new position.
Ah-Hoy was the starting inside linebacker when he was lost due to injury this last year.
I would guess that Rashed is the next most likely candidate to move to DE. Next maybe Hughes Murray.
I like to think that the linebackers will be pretty interchangeable from inside to outside allowing us to put the best 4 on the field and lots of flexibility for depth. So I do not see much return for the time spent in speculating who will be a inside versus outside linebacker with the new staff.
In regards to Garcia, I understand, that he had difficulty getting along with the previous coaching staff, specifically that he felt like there was constant oversight and pressure. This is why he decided to move on.
I would like to see Turnier and Garcia return. The new coaching staff appears to not have interest in them, that could change. There is enough history (although it is extremely minor) to raise red flags in these players returning. Because of this I am trusting the current coaching staffs' decision as they have all the information.

My 2 cents, which is worth absolutely nothing: I would like to see us pull in prep talent instead of battling the likes of Indiana, Buffalo, FIU etc for Turnier and Garcia. Neither one of their offer sheets look to me like they are being evaluated as having top talent, and I've not been a great big fan of the evaluation ability of the previous staff at this point.
