Liuchan never left last summer, that was false information. We did know something was brewing though as he is gone now. Unutoa-Whitson was already slated to move to DE. That will probably still happen as he was been working on his body to be ready for the new position. Ah-Hoy was the starting inside linebacker when he was lost due to injury this last year. I would guess that Rashed is the next most likely candidate to move to DE. Next maybe Hughes Murray. I like to think that the linebackers will be pretty interchangeable from inside to outside allowing us to put the best 4 on the field and lots of flexibility for depth. So I do not see much return for the time spent in speculating who will be a inside versus outside linebacker with the new staff. In regards to Garcia, I understand, that he had difficulty getting along with the previous coaching staff, specifically that he felt like there was constant oversight and pressure. This is why he decided to move on. I would like to see Turnier and Garcia return. The new coaching staff appears to not have interest in them, that could change. There is enough history (although it is extremely minor) to raise red flags in these players returning. Because of this I am trusting the current coaching staffs' decision as they have all the information. My 2 cents, which is worth absolutely nothing: I would like to see us pull in prep talent instead of battling the likes of Indiana, Buffalo, FIU etc for Turnier and Garcia. Neither one of their offer sheets look to me like they are being evaluated as having top talent, and I've not been a great big fan of the evaluation ability of the previous staff at this point. Yeah... I hate to say it, but if it was Riley that offered these guys with unimpressive offer sheets, that is one thing. He put out a 14 year history of finding diamonds in the rough. He earned the right for us to go "okay, you see something there others do not" Andersen has exactly the opposite... zero proof he could identify and deploy talent at all. One should ultimately question everybody he recruited and every position they were sent to. CJS has to earn his rep... but with this staff (and Riley...) to lean on, I think we are going to like what we see.

He was a guy who I expected to become another Beaver LB great by the time he left us. MR and staff spotted him and offered early then he had an incredible senior season and started receiving a lot of late offers after he'd already committed to us. I believe ASU offered late and USC was showing a lot of interest, not sure if they offered. Then there was Songy who showed a lot of promise at LB and left sometime after GA arrived. Don't recall the circumstances, just remembered he looked to be a good one.

I'll give GA the benefit of the doubt and suggest we don't know if it was a flaw in recognizing talent or if it was simply a matter of not knowing how to develop talent once on campus. It's pretty clear we didn't have a system to recruit to which is extremely important in college when you don't attract the best athletes. So without a clear cut system to recruit to I don't know how you put players in a position to succeed. My point is he may have been that bad of a HC it rendered whatever talent he brought in unrecognizable. A couple players managed to overcome this like DeCoud and Pierce, but for the rest not having proper development and a system to learn, fit in, and grow yearly through experience probably hid a lot of players potential. At least I'm hoping that's the case and we see a lot of current GA players bloom going forwards.

Don't recall the circumstances, just remembered he looked to be a good one. Songy was a very interesting guy. He was born in Belgium and grew up in New Orleans. His family was displaced by Hurricane Katrina, and he went to high school in Austin about 10-15 minutes away from Pflugerville High School, where Storm Woods attended. Songy received interest from LSU, Oklahoma, TCU, and Texas, but he signed with Oregon State. He backed up Jabral Johnson at SLB and was not expected to see much playing time, but Michael Doctor was lost for the year against Hawai'i. Songy ended up playing in 12 games, notching 12 tackles. He failed three drug tests before the 2014 season started, so he was suspended for the year but was the scout team defensive MVP. Andersen kicked him off the team shortly after fall camp started in 2015. Songy wound up at South Alabama in 2016 as a redshirt junior, where he started at the Mike position in a 4-2-5 base defense. His 100 tackles led the team in 2016. He logged double-digit tackles in four games, including the 16 in the Arizona Bowl against Air Force. He also had 7.5 TFLs, a sack, a pass breakup, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. South Alabama finished the year in eighth place in the Sun Belt, but, thanks to upset wins against #19 San Diego State and Mississippi State in Starkville (as well as two games against FCS teams and a lack of bowl-eligible teams), the Jaguars finished 6-6 and bowl eligible. South Alabama fell off in 2017 and Songy statistics did with them. Songy was asked to do more in the passing game, logging an interception and four pass breakups, but only 62 tackles, 5 TFLs, and a sack. Songy finished honorable mention All-Sun Belt his two years there.

In a few decades we will look back at this era with a sense of shame.

If your point is that testing positive for cannabis in the sports context is largely much ado about nothing, I agree with you 100%.

If he had only waited a couple of months more! Why would it have mattered if he waited a couple months more? I think Wilky is just making a wisecrack about Oregon legalizing recreational cannabis. We all know that it's still federally illegal.

Garcia was a high 3 star recruit with many offers. He was not a mediocre recruit. He was a USC commit at one time. USC often has those early commits that turn to decommits when they get a commit from a higher ranked recruit.
The main reason for Garcia's decommit from USC was probably that they became shaky when questions arose about his eligibility. The eligibility problem forced Garcia to basically gray-shirt. Unfortunately Garcia was not to blame as his grades and everything were fine, but Bellevue (his high school) was under scrutiny for wrong doing and the NCAA took a long time to clear Garcia because of where his grades came from. This is how I understand the situation. So a highly ranked recruit was devalued and not recruited as much late due to the issues.

I think Wilky is just making a wisecrack about Oregon legalizing recreational cannabis. We all know that it's still federally illegal. And a banned substance by the NCAA. Other than that.... It's a banned substance by the NCAA. But who decides the testing parameters? Correct me if I am wrong (I very well could be), but I do not believe that the NCAA does define the testing parameters (e.g., who gets tested, how often, and for what). Isn't that up to the conference? Marijuana is banned by the Olympics, which means that it will probably continue to be banned by the NCAA for the foreseeable future. Plus, I believe that keeping marijuana illegal is actually mandated by international treaty. Before it was superseded, the Hague Convention required all signatories to outlaw marijuana.
