Cav's RESULTS were always "Jekyll and Hyde" to me. Some, GREAT! Some, just awful. Some, NFL! Some....not even close. He was colorful, but a lazy recruiter, as I recall. Syracuse, NY is ahelluva long ways away..

Syracuse, NY is ahelluva long ways away.. Cav is from Connecticut originally. Played at New Haven etc. That's going back home. I don't recall Cav being a lazy recruiter - the staff called him "the Desert Dog" because his territory was the pacific southwest, and we pulled some good recruits out of Arizona. In fact, I think Cav had a decent rep as a recruiter. Remember, coaches recruit territories not necessarily skill groups/positions. I think Cav is about like any other OL coach (only as good as the talent potential he has to work with), and we had seasons where we whiffed badly on OL. Maybe that happened because Cav was able to coach up what was not considered blue chip talent, so the focus on the talent waned a bit because there were enough projects laying around and Cav was a magician. Whatever you say about Cav, he produced 3 All Americans (Seumalo, Levitre, Perry) and 23 players with All Conference honors during the decade he was with Oregon State. That's phenomenal really when you look at it.

That's phenomenal really when you look at it. Cav has a lot of endearing qualities, but when I evaluate him I think he is Riley's weakest coach for quite a while. He may be a victim of the system, but the yard per carry behind his line has been poor for quite some time. Over the past ten years his team has ranked 110, 78, 42, 98, 106, 102, 115, 88, 67, and 53 in yards per carry. His team has been ranked 66, 12, 8, 108, 67, 101, 71, 109, 78, and 24 in sacks allowed per game. The sacks allowed per game is a better performance. The most disturbing thing is the longer he is there to install his system the worse it gets. I think Cav has become a bit of a dinosaur and is no longer an effective coach. I have never seen any evidence that he is any more than an average recruiter. He is liked by many especially the players he has coached. This is a definite positive. It has been many years since he has shown statistically that he is a good coach.

And New Mexico/Arizona. So literally the Southwest AND the Pacific, I guess. Levitre came out of Arizona. He was like 360 plus in high school and his brother was considered to be the better prospect. But Andy had that natural athleticism and an unbelievable work ethic, and Cav molded him into an All American.

Correction: Andy Levitre attended and was recruited out of San Lorenzo Valley High School in Felton, California, a town in the Santa Cruz Mountains in the northern part of that county. His older brother played at University of Arizona.

He became a cranky, bitter man at the end of his time making public comments criticizing fan frustration toward MR at the end of the OSU era for that staff. His olines were average in the end both here and at Nebraska. Cav peaked a decade ago.

I too think Coach Cav was on staff too long. The lack of talent and depth in the oline was getting tiresome.

His final OL at OSU (2014) included three NFL players, Isaac Seumalo, Dustin Stanton and Sean Harlow. Our top three rushers averaged 6.3, 5.2 and 6.2 yards per carry. Reads to me as if our OL was more than adequate.
