...ALL players-- even pro players -- learning and using basic football fundamentals. If the Saint safety who whiffed on his attempt at a tackle on that last play had just WRAPPED-UP the Viking receiver instead of recklessly launching himself like a (misguided) missile at the receiver's legs, the game would have been over with a Saint win. And not only did he miss the hit, he knocked another defender out of the play.
All of this serves to highlight one of the reasons why I'm so enthusiastic about J. Smith and the cohort of assistant coaches he has brought with him to Corvallis: Compared to the recent CGA regime, all seem much more concerned with teaching fundamentals and relying on them during games.

The way I understand it was that the defender was trying to avoid a pass interference call and actually meant to miss the receiver as he was a bit too early on his hit. A PI call would have given the Vikings a first down and a field goal try with the clock stopped at around 4 seconds or so. If the receiver catches the ball and falls down and is then touched......game over and the Saints win. It made #38 look like an idiot that's for sure but there was a reason he did not want to WRAP-UP too early and cause the PI.

Agreed - a lot of criticism on that missed tackle - the problem is that if that catch is made and receiver gets out of bounds, odds are pretty good that the Vikings win anyway. You certainly prefer that to the actual outcome, but the defender initially is thinking they have to stop a catch from being made at all that deep - not just keeping them out of the end zone.

I chalk it up to karma biting "bounty" Peyton's arse minutes after he mocked the Vikings crowd.
Go Beavs!! Skol Vikings!!
