See us play Ohio State on a warm September day, or Toledo in El Paso on windy 45 degree day? I'd rather seems play Toledo on a windy 45 degree day, or see them play Cincinnati or UConn or hell, let's take on the undefeated National Championship team and play UCF. I favor playing those three over Ohio State any day.

In other words, have you always felt that way about the 1 game payday vs a traditional power or is it because we're really bad right now?

I checked the low-level bowl game option, but that is because of the state of the program right now.
If/when OSU becomes a Pac 12 title contender, or at least a team that can win 8-10 games in a season, then I would love to see OSU test its meddle in late-summer games against top teams.

Getting to a bowl game, even a lower-tier bowl game, is invaluable for the program. This is no contest.

Oregon State threw body-bag games on the schedule in 2004, 2008, and 2015 and what amounted to a body-bag game on the schedule in 2010. The 2004 and 2015 seasons were not really affected by the games.
Scheduling Penn State in 2008 might have been to Oregon State's favor. The Penn State game really set the Beavers up for the success that they experienced over the next 10 weeks. However, the problem with scheduling the Penn State game was that the school moved the Stanford game from October 25 to August 28. The loss to Stanford cost Oregon State the Rose Bowl. So, if the choice were a road game in Pennsylvania or the Rose Bowl against Penn State, I would choose the Rose Bowl.
2010 was tough, because of how the season shook out. USC was on probation, and Arizona State was ineligible, because the Devils played two FCS teams. If Oregon State would have played an FCS team rather than TCU, the Beavers would have likely gone 6-6. The Alamo Bowl chose 7-5 Arizona over 6-6 Washington. (The Wildcats also beat the Huskies by 30.) The Alamo Bowl likely would not have picked Oregon State. Both Arizona and Washington would have been more attractive choices. If anything, adding Oregon State would have bolstered the Huskies' chances at landing that bid. Arizona wound up losing to #16 Oklahoma State by 26. That would have left the Holiday Bowl. Regardless of which team went to the Alamo Bowl, Oregon State would have been the likely choice for the Holiday Bowl and #17 Nebraska. Arizona went to the Holiday Bowl the year before and lost to Nebraska by 33. Nebraska had defeated Washington by 35 points in Seattle in September. Thus, in 2010, the choice was #6 TCU in Arlington on September 4th or #17 Nebraska in San Diego on December 30th. The choice there is obviously San Diego on December 30th. I did not go to Arlington, but I probably would have gone to watch Oregon State in San Diego. If somehow Oregon State would have fallen past the Holiday Bowl, the Sun Bowl opponent was Miami. Notre Dame replaced the Pac-12 and won 33-17. Both the Holiday and Sun Bowls featured more well-known opponents, and the Holiday Bowl featured San Diego.
Stephen Paea graduated in 2011. His last game was losing the Civil War by 17, rather than beating up on Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. Quizz declared in 2011. His last game was losing the Civil War by 17. If Oregon State would have gone bowling, maybe Quizz would have stuck around another year and maybe 2011 would not have been such an unmitigated disaster.
Obviously, if Oregon State had defeated LSU, Penn State, TCU, or Michigan, the analysis is different.

@beaverfever - correct. I'd rather watch us play a national power in an historic stadium than see us play a middle of the road P5 team or a semi decent Group of 5 team in an off campus stadium devoid of charm any day.
Outside of New Year's Six bowl.....I mean would your rather watch a game vs. Texas in Austin or San Antonio? Would you see a game vs. Ohio State in Columbus or a baseball stadium in San Francisco? To me it's a no brainer.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not having a lot of fun watching the Beavs go down by half a hundred even if it is in the Shoe, or Death Valley, or The Big House, or Darrel K. Royal-Texas Memorial stadium. Sure, I would rather take an almost-upset like the game in Baton Rouge than a victory over New Mexico in a bowl game, but the reality is, that's not the shot that we've got. You're pitting an absolute drubbing against a competitive game in the post-season, in reality. At least in terms of this year and the very near future.

If you're going to get your ass kicked you might as well do it somewhere with historical significance! But damn, you never know. We should have beat LSU...

Whether is in baseball or football, LSU somehow manages to make Me hate them more the the Hole down south. The losses still sting like it was yesterday 😓

Wins are never guaranteed. I've never been one to say "well, if the Beavs don't make a bowl game this year, I'm not renewing my season tickets. I don't go to games to see wins. I go because I enjoy college football. If we win, great. If we lose...not great, but at least I got to grill some meats and hang with my dad for an evening. I don't care if we lose by 50. It's not my preferred outcome, but just like I've seen us knock of #1 USC or #2 Cal when nobody gave us a chance, I've also seen us lose to Sac St. and EWU. I've seen the basketball team lose by 50 AT HOME to Seattle and beat Arizona in McKale in the same season. You never know until you play the game. You can't beat Ohio State or Florida State or any other big time team unless you play them.

I was so fortunate to have that season happen at that time. And that game never would have happened without a soft OOC schedule to get the new elements (the Presidents, TJ and Chad were all notably fresh JC transfers) to gel together. We had to gut out a road game at New Mexico State, had a 2 point victory at home over EWU before stomping a 3-win SDSU team which saw Ted Tollner fired at the end of the season. Playing a solid P5 team in the early season would have de-railed the Fiesta Bowl appearance.

.....or do we gain needed experience to beat Washington later on in the season in what amounted to our first true road test? Then we're still 10-1, but 8-0 in conference and in the Rose Bowl vs. Purdue.
