i have less than stellar eyesight and tend to see what i want to, so if any of these observations don't jibe with others who were there, Thats fine:
Mountainside is a mint-in-the-box school and the football field has a sweet view of a hill and wine vineyard across the street! These kids are gonna have a nice reisling for first period and a chardonnay after study hall.
Scrimmage format was about 40 minutes of live drills and special teams practice, then some 7 on 7, then some warm up 11 on 11 no tackling, then live scrimaging.
Coach Smith at midfield during what looked like the kick off gunner release drill. Very head coach like!
Saw a little bit of Riley doing individual coach em ups. Staying low key. Fits right in.
Player evals:
saw lots of Champ Fleming, returning punts, runs from scrimmage, catching the ball. Very quick, very small. Could be a good weapon. He did drop at least one punt shag. a little bit scary because nobody was even coming at him. It looks like he doesnt quite have the centerfielder mentality for it but maybe he will get it down.
Christpher Wallace got some carries at RB. He runs pretty high, ala Steven Jackson, shows some power and burst. He can help the run game.
Pierce, he did his thing inside. Not much room to the outside. Overall the run blocking was marginal to weak. Not a time for him or the other guys to shine.
Kee Whetzel big hit popped the ball out with his helmet on a run or a pass completion, not sure which one it was.
Right tackle 78 had a couple of movement penalties in the drills. Hate to see that. But i will say the drill was all about trying to get the line to move so hopefully the coaching is sleuthing that problem out before it matters.
Hodgins looks more physical this year and looks Pac 12 fast. He will make a big leap from frosh to soph i believe.
Somebody who looked like Travon Bradford ( i know he was injured early in the week so not positive it was him) dropped a catchable ball but caught another one later. Over all the receivers were a Mixed bag
Punter: couple of shanks, work to be done.
FG kicker kicked well. Really well. Drilled almost every attempt.
Quarterbacks:
Luton clearly the only qb showing a pac 12 arm today but his play fakes are still terrible and his footwork does not look crisp. He really can make a lot of throws though. Unless Dukart comes in and blows the doors off i don't see how the beavs can mount a credible passing threat unless its Luton doing the throwing. Again, based on what i saw. Your mileage may vary.
One cool thing was the Go Pro camera on Luton's helmet. I wonder who thought this up? Great idea to evaluate qb play by seeing what he sees during the play.
Colletto made a nice run to the outside and also connected on a deep ball later in the scrimmage. He can be a decent backup.
All in all this practice seemed to have a productive format. The players moved a little more leisurely than i would hace expected but hey they are millenials. What you gonna do.
