Great stuff!! I feel like I have learned enough to pass Oregon State Football 101. Here is my report of what I now know:
- I hate the ducks (aka nike U) - I love coach Jonathan Smith - I need to make a pilgrimage to Clodfelters & Squirrels - My new favorite player is RB Pierce…note I will be unhappy in a win or a loss unless he carries the ball 30 or more times!!! RTDB!!! - I agree to be outwardly optimistic but secretly expect the worst. - I will avoid any and all Mike Riley discussions. - I will create insulting nicknames for rivals. - wear black to games? Would have thought Orange…but OK - Finally, I learned that beaverfever lives in his parents basement, while watching Friends reruns…How u doing?

Not a single mention of best tailgating in P12, voted best campus in P12, shot ski, beer bong, corn hole, slow smoked briskett, Jameson, cheerleaders, marching band, chainsaws, 1st down chant(HOOUH) or flagpoles.
You should also learnt to become extremely testy about most things especially game times/days set by conference at broadcaster's request. Also P12 has traditionally very bad officiating, especially glasses ref.
You must know the 2007 UW game(or was it 08'?) and our QB laying out biggest DE in conference on a crackblock. Also chippiest game in last few decades, sent Jake Locker to hospital on stretcher, and refs made most terrible call that had the Beavers lost, might have cost the refs serious harm. Night game and never experienced a more fired up crowd ever after that call. You must study this game.

Beaver Fandom 103 entire quarter is dedicated to assigning the exact percentage of responsibility for 2000's success to Riley's recruits vs Erickson's recruits and identifying the exact moment Beaver fans went from hating Matt Moore to being willing to take multiple bullets for him.

I have never experienced a louder, longer, more sustained chorus of boos (and other words) as I heard after that call...

October 14th, 2006 at Husky Stadium. Beaver fans openly cheer when Moore is replaced by freshman Sean Canfield in the second quarter, despite being 4-6 with 53 yards. Leading 10-3 at the time, the Beaver offense goes dormant, as Canfield can only muster a 3 and out on his first drive, and is picked off on the first play of his second drive. Moore returns, but throws a pick of his own as the momentum clearly shifts to Washington. OSU trails 17-10 at the half. Moore is 7-10 for 67 yards and a pick at the half. In the second half, Moore goes 7-9 for 241 yards and a TD, leading OSU to 17 straight points and a 27-17 victory. Fans that were cheering his replacement in the first half are now bowing towards him as he celebrates the game clinching TD. Class dismissed. Enjoy your summer.

Now now, it was only egregious if you are a Beaver fan....
Dad's weekend game, I'm positive a riot would have resulted had the fuskies prevailed.
Go Beavs!!

My exact moment IIRC was perhaps his first throw in second half of the Hawaii game on the road. Ten yard out bullet to Stroughter(?) to the stick from the far hash for a first down. I remember saying to a couple friends "I think Matt Moore might be an NFL quarterback."

The first win of an 8-1 finish to 2006... I think you are right that is the game the fans got behind Moore. I would say the game that turned the season around was the 13-6 loss to WSU to game before. despite losing, I think our defense flipped a switch. Notably, a finally using a nickel back switch.

Oh another thing about being a Beaver fan - we use AC/DC's "TNT" as our fourth quarter intro song, but every year it seems we hold some sort of vote to replace it, no consensus is ever reached, and we go right on back to using TNT even though it very infrequently energizes the stadium. Notable failed attempts at replacing TNT included that brief stretch where someone thought that Gangnam Style was going to have staying power and also the much maligned but never really given a full chance "Chainsaw" by Family Force 5. Chainsaw was doomed when it debuted during a 2013 loss to FCS power Eastern Washington. I think it stayed around for the Hawaii game, and maybe the Colorado game, but I'm almost positive it was no longer in rotation by the time we got to Stanford in mid-October.
Looking at the stats, we actually outscored EWU and Hawaii in the 4th quarter during the Chainsaw era. We were up 38-3 vs. Colorado and called the dogs off in the 4th (and to be honest I don't remember if Chainsaw was still a thing.) We would not win another home game the rest of the season, losing to Stanford, USC, and UW, with the UW game being particularly rough in that we were down 62-6 at one point.
Perhaps the chainsaw gods were displeased......

If you _really_ want to learn Oregon State 101, you're going to have some homework.
Assignment #1: After 27 straight years of losing seasons, this is the moment when the corner started to get turned, on the road at Husky Stadium against Washington in 1998. OSU's starting QB Terrance Bryant went out with an injury in the 2nd quarter, and in came backup quarterback, freshman walk-on Jonathan Smith. The Beavs were down 21-0 at the time. Smith threw for 406 yards in 2.5 quarters, which set the Husky Stadium passing record at the time. Unfortunately I can't find any full video, but here is the final drive from that game, starting on the Beaver 21-yard-line with 24 seconds left:
Unfortunately, the heartbreaking missed 2-point conversion isn't shown in this video, but this game was an earthquake through Beaver Nation. Suddenly every Beaver alumni in the state looked up and took notice of what was going on in Corvallis after nearly 3 decades of futility. Many Beaver fans point to this game as the moment their fandom was renewed after decades of being dormant.
Assignment #2: After the heartbreaking loss at Washington, the next week the Beavs lost at home to Cal by 1 point thanks to multiple turnovers. The following week, they had #2 UCLA at home, and were tied at 34 with less than a minute to go, but a blown secondary coverage allowed UCLA to throw a wide-open bomb for a touchdown to win. This was the Beavs' 6th loss on the season, guaranteeing a 28th-straight losing season. All that was left was the Civil War at home against the #15 ducks, led by QB Akili Smith, the eventual 3rd overall pick in the draft that year. The Beavs had nothing left but pride to play for, but this is where the corner was officially turned. If you are committed to this assignment, you will watch the entire game from beginning to end, without looking up how it ends:
If you decide that you _MUST_ cheat on this assignment, then at the very least watch from the beginning of the 4th quarter all the way to the end. But you really don't want to cheat on this commitment to your girlfriend, do you?
Assignment #3: Your last assignment is the culmination of OSU busting into the modern era and being relevant in college football again. Start this from the beginning, and watch as much of it as you'd like, but chances are if you're a college football fan, then watching the golden domers get stomped into the ground just never gets tiring...
And so ends today's lessons. If you watch these videos, you'll share a starting point for OSU football fandom with many others in the modern era following the "bad old days". So many great moments and games since then, but this is where it all began, and represents where we all want to be again...
GO BEAVS!
