Hey all! Newby here. So here is my story I am a lifelong Georgia Tech fan who finds himself dating a super cute Oregon State Alum. We have agreed to prep for football season by learning about each other’s team (and becoming a fan). So here I am…help a guy out. What are some basics I need to know about being a Beaver fan?

elcome! My opinion? You have to be tough! Oh, and you have to hate the ducks, which you should find relatively easy. My son and I both think the GT white honeycomb helmets are the best helmets in college football, followed by the cool Navy special dark blue/white/gold with anchor. Also love the gold Ford Model A that drives on the field. Very cool.

You should either find or build a suitable brick wall. And then bash your head into it every morning

Hey all! Welcome aboard! Your primer: Oregon State is currently at rock bottom after a overall successful past 15 years. We are not a legacy football program by any measure, and have the infamy of being the authors of 28 straight losing seasons. Our losing ways changed with the hiring of Mike Riley in 1997, and altered our destiny by changing our recruiting ways and our offense and defense. He left in 1998 for the San Diego Chargers, after going 5-6... yes, a record of 3-8 and 5-6 at Oregon State was considered such a rousing success at the time a pro team hired him. St. Dennis Erickson, freshly fired from the Seahawks came to our aid in a time of need. He was not the hero we deserved, but rather the hero we needed. Oregon State broke it's 28 years of losing by winning 7 games in 1999, then went 11-1 and curb stomped the gold domers in the fiesta bowl. Erickson would leave for the 49ers in 2002 and we'd bring back Mike Riley, whose run at San Diego did not go so great on account of a guy you may of heard off called Ryan Leaf. Riley built Oregon State into a conference contender again, winning 10 games in 2006 and twice being the bridesman but never the bride to the Rose Bowl in 2008 and 2009. Riley's magic faltered a bit in 2010 and 2011, but he reserged with a 9 win 2012 campaign that featured toppling then #10 Wisconsin in the season opener and rolling off 7 wins before an untimely defeat at the hands of Washington. The season ended on a sour note, with a lose to dominate Oregon and an bad loss to a Texas team we were manhandling until we forgot how to block other humans. The next two years were disappointments, while we still went to a bowl game in 2013, we missed out in 2014, going 5-7. Riley then shocked the world and accepted the Nebraska job and we made the biggest mistake of the century in hiring Gary Andersen. We will pretend like the next 3 years never happened. Here we are today, with new head coach Jonathan Smith, home town hero and QB of the 11-1 fiesta bowl team. Coach Smith was previously OC for Petersen up at Washington before we brought him home. We are all (mostly) super pumped for the next era of OSU football! Games to "research" on the youtubes: 1998 Civil War. The tingles just thinking about it. 2001 Fiesta Bowl. Everybody loves watching Notre Dame get stomped 2006 vs #3 USC. Missing our starting RB no less. 2006 Sun Bowl. Just fast forward to the 4th quarter comeback, culminated by... I won't spoil it. 2008 vs #1 USC... USC started to dislike us after this. 2012 vs #10 Wisconsin. Defensive thriller 2016 Civil War, as much as I want to pretend these years didn't happen, the running game dominance in the 2nd half is epic.

You'll impress her by reading up on the national championships that we won in 1981 and 1982. Glory Days. Think we beat Penn State or Nebraska or maybe both of them at the same time. All of those old dream seasons run together, so I forget.

Welcome - as an Oregon State alum who married a super cute Oregon State alum, I will double down on the needing to be tough, and hating the ucks - the LSDTR (little sisters down the road), which you will find easy, I agree.
You are here in Benny's House where we take our sports (almost) as seriously as those in the SE US, if the ski resorts aren't operating, the campgrounds are too crowded, and coast is full of Washingtonians trying to avoid the sales tax.
We are eternal optimists (or eternal pessimists) when it comes to football, believe that baseball is numero uno (at least I do). I make at least one annual pilgrimage to Clodfelters and Squirrels, and love my University nestled in a small town in NW Oregon.

Definitely not a troll. I feel like I can totally relate to everyone here. As a GT fan we deal with all the annoying Dawg fans (very few of which actually went to their school!). I already can’t stand that other Oregon school! I showed her this thread and I already have gotten some bonus points. So thanks!! Great responses!
So who are we (can I use that yet?) excited about this year? Some running back, quarterback, linebacker…

Well, at the risk of losing our cool helmet style points…we don’t use the honeycomb helmets anymore. I liked them, but we tried to do the same pattern on our shoulder pads too. Looked like a hot mess!

So who are we (can I use that yet?) excited about this year? Some running back, quarterback, linebacker… I’m excited about our rb Pierce. I, unlike most posters here, like the qb Luton. Only time will tell. I like our secondary, good corners, hard hitter Jalen Moore at safety. O and D lines a big huge concern. Lost a great mlb Hungalu. Good receivers and tight ends. One TE, Togiai could be a game changer if he can learn to hang onto the ball. The last staff couldn’t coach their way out of a wet paper sack so I’m down with J Smith and crew. Good stuff- Go Beavers!
