Apparently the ducks think that label applies to Justin Herbert. I think he may end up in the NFL ( size alone ), but that he will be an ‘adequate’ backup for several years. If he isn’t blessed with speed and hands with whomever drafts him - then he will instantly be ‘inadequate’. How will he do this year ? He will continue to be a guy that plays well against the lower rung teams, but, who seems to disappear when facing better defenses. The duck hype machine is going to work the Harrington Heisman campaign again....( especially after 3- 4 early OOC games). I don’t know anything about Auburn, however, can’t see them not wanting to prepare to the max and execute even better. Continuous oversell and underdeliver...

Looking at Herbert last year showed me that I liked Luton better as a passer. Luton has a quicker release. He still is not likely to be a star pro QB but if he can pick up O schemes quickly, then he can shuffle off to Buffalo or any of the other 31 franchises, collecting a check as a backup QB.
Herbert is not even as good as Harrington and look what J5P's pro career did, crash and burn. The best physical specimen from an Oregon college as a passer was DA and that was only good enough to get him to one Pro Bowl along with a long career as a backup. For overall talent, Mariota is top dog for any QB who played college ball in the 21st century in our state. Heisman Trophy. Won a Rose Bowl college playoff game against the defending national champs who also had a Heisman QB. Great character too. So what has he done for Tennessee? The Titans are a borderline playoff contender at best since he was drafted by them.
Now let's look at Elway, who is the best QB this conference of ours ever produced. He got smoked like a cheap cigar in the Super Bowls he played in until he was in his last two seasons. Does that say, or better, scream, that the learning curve to be a Genuine Star in Sunday play is steep as can be? You bet it does. Then it also helps to wind up on a team being capably run by the GM and coaching staff, something that put the kibosh on DA in Cleveland.
As for Auburn vs Oregon, the Duck physical presence on O is going to get their biggest test of the entire regular season from Auburn's D-line. Does that doom them? Not if they play good D, which we totally failed to do in Columbus. Auburn's O is just okay, not 'Bama strong. We will find out if Oregon's OC can come up with the scheme to defuse a solid front like we did at tOSU. If he or the HC cannot, Oregon will not hit the heights a talented team like theirs should. On the other hand, an Oregon win sets them up to go 12-0, win the Pac-12 Championship Game, then find their way to the slaughter altar of the college football playoffs against Alabama, Clemson and whoever else makes it. They would be better served losing a conference game, ending the rankings as the #5 seed and going to the Rose Bowl if a decent chance for a happy ending to their season is desired.
I still feel the same as I did earlier about us beating the Oklahoma OSU. First game of the season means we will be at our healthiest. Maximum preparation time. Home field advantage. Just enough added talent to keep us competitive against a team which is good but not great. Something to prove. We aren't a great D team but neither are the Cowboys, so this game will be a traditional Pac-12 or Big XII shootout affair that both teams are used to being in at various times.
Enough of my musings. There's enough posters here to keep this thread going...LOL!

It’s PAC 12 football, they are an In State Rival, their PR rag continues to put out ‘in your face’ fodder to sell more Nike gear and more season tix - while we get ‘negative attention’ , so I guess it’s not relevant at all - I just read a thread that was supposedly beaver athlete focused, and they ended up with several posts on tequila and Margaritas - so, excuse me for being just a bit ‘into’ the upcoming football season and our opponents. Guess I should go to bar tending school.

Nice, reasoned reply nexus. A guy that works for me is an Auburn guy, and he is so ‘war eagle’, that it would make a Norte Dame fan blush. One year, they were playing USC at Auburn, guy calls me on his phone right before kick off and yells ‘ War Eagle’ baby - this is how Auburn does it. Didn’t hear from him the rest of the game, because it was an absolute rout for the toe- jams. ‘ Everyone’ is undefeated before their first game. I think the duck game will be close , however, their RB’s and WR’s are not going to be on the field til next year, when ju ju is playing in Canada or with M Riley’s new pro gig in Siberia - The Siberian Huskies.

Bitching, moaning, pure immature pettiness isn't quite the same as fun banter about alcohol etc. But, you go for it.

Herbert reminds me ALOT of Nick Foles, similiar size and what is really striking is they both are STREAKY as hell.
Like Herbert will come out for one half and look like Steve Young and then in the second half look Steve Walsh.

Lol - Really going out on a limb there Mel Kiper. He was mocked in the 1st round all year last year and has been mocked top 10-15 next year.
If we had a guy like that - a homegrown kid from CHS or CV, come to Oregon State, have success and enter the season as a potential NFL franchise guy, I like to think even our athletic dept might put together a Heisman campaign. It’s really ok for schools to do that.

I also think Luton is better, at least until Herbert gets good coaching. He got ruined by Taggart and Recruiter Dude.
