On the first day of Spring practice I would call the team together and tell them that they are either "all in" or all out. I.e., "If you want to be part of this team, I want you to commit right now to complete the year including the bowl game." You do it for your teammates, for your coaches, for your school, and for your fans. If you don't want to make that commitment, now is the time to say so. It is solely your choice."
See Kitan Oladapo for reference.

You would be an idiot to threaten athletes. They finally have some power after 100 years of bulls%#t.
You want to keep players make it worth their while. That doesn't just mean money. Having a reputation for development, campus opportunities, degree paths, culture in the program ect ect ect. Only about 400 players a year have a legit chance at the NFL via draft, FA or practice squads.
Create a program where players get some compensation in money but mostly in opportunity.
Hell even offering partnerships between the university and local businesses for athletes to develop their own business opportunities. A bunch of them were making some scratch doing landscaping.
If you threaten them you just end up with players with no other options who will bail as soon as they have some.

Have some power? Many of the players in major college athletics have had their arses kissed since middle school. It's ironic that the word "committment" is used anymore.
You mention a landscaping business. I kind of laughed at that when hodgins was doing that kind of work simply because he was actually working and not simply getting a handful of cash.

All in or all out means we'd probably immediately lose several players who would prefer not to play for a coach on a power trip.
That type of power trip crap didn't help the Beavers under Andersen. If the transfer portal had existed after he left 30-40 percent of the team at the bus stop for the Civil War, the team would have largely emptied out.

Can’t kiss their asses, but MUST show respect, and a welcoming environment. Like it or not (some do…some don’t), the portal coupled with NIL money has let the cat outta the bag. He’s/she’s NEVER going back in that bag.

I don't recall a threat. I recall a suggestion that an individual lives up to his commitment. FOR ONE YEAR!
And if we are talking about respect... how about the players respect the rest of their teammates and not bail? There is plenty of time to enter the portal after the bowl game.

The problem with making a commitment through the bowl game is that if a player has decided to transfer it is in their best interest to get into the portal as soon as it opens in order to have more options, which is well before the bowl games. imo there is a balance between what is best for the team and what is best for their own self-interest.

The universities have made billions for decades then they completely screwed up NIL. If they hadn't been greedy and linked the schools success to the players compensation and benefits their would be much more equity today. Failed institution lead to loss of institutional power.

I would definitely turn down huge upgrade opportunities in my life for respect. Turn that right around, shouldn't your team mates respect you and want the best for you than using your talent to selfishly help them? And yes using that kind of power play is a threat. You have power and you are telling them do what I want or consequences. It's absolutely stupid.

Oh, I get it, now. “Non-specific.” “Them,” too.

If you are talking about TV money, that is more like 30 on the high side.

Nobody likes the current situation, but the way to fix it isn't to handcuff our players to the team when other teams' players are not so chained down. In fact, we want to produce players that are wanted by other schools and the NFL. That's what happens when we're successful.
Also, please remember that we were hit doubly hard this year. I'm sure we are where we are because of the fall of the Pac 12. I'm sure a lot of players and coaches left because of the uncertainty of our future. Had the Pac 12 stayed together, I think Smith would still be home in Corvallis instead of freezing his ass off in Michigan (I hope).

Right now they're setting records for warmth In the upper Midwest I hope they get winter soon And we can say that hell did freeze over.
