when I watched the warm ups of Garreston and Blount and Mcmaryion, i saw that Garreston throws the ball down towards the ground alot fastball style, Blount puts good air under the ball, i'd say the beavs should rotate the QB's against Utah to confuse their defense, have Garrestson for short dump off passes and QB runs, and have Blount for a the good 30 yard passes. Could that be a way to defeat Utah?

(I think that he will be a better quarterback, when all is said and done.) However, Blount is very green right now. He needs time to mature. Garretson gives Oregon State a better chance to win right now.

From what I have seen of Utah, they struggle on offense most of the time (manufacturing points). I think one or two games they've scored higher than 30? Very similar issues to us, in that their QB has troubles with accuracy downfield. They throw a lot of slants and other 3 step type stuff. Their receivers aren't going to kill you with YAC but they do have a stable of RBs. Someone said they are down to their 6th RB right now? If that's the case (and we are pretty healthy) I really like our chances. Their RB Shyne (DE recruit) is a stud! Don't know if he's injured but he's a solid overall back. Defensively, they always have some big boys up front in the trenches but their defense is no where near as tough as last season. They're not looking as athletic in the backend (secondary) this season as compared to last either. Not to say they're bad, they're just not as good as they were last year.
They're QB has struggled with the deep ball but is very mobile. An emphasis of stopping their running attack but having our secondary stay over the top (so we don't get caught playing up too much-don't give them the easy uncontested throws, even if they're struggling to hit them regularly). Guys just need to stay gap sound up front and again, take care of their assignments/job! Secondary, stay deeper than the deepest when it's your assignment. 3rd and long (6+) will hurt their offense much like it does ours!
I think the leader in time of possession will be a big indicator of who wins (obviously as long as there are some points scored). I would not be surprised to see big Elu Aydon play some TE this week in some sets (perhaps goal line or other short yardage). Hope we're healthy but this is a winnable game. Utah is not a legit top 25 team (IMO). Their schedule combined with the carry over record from last season, has put them into the top 25 and they are working themselves out of it. This is the same Utes team that failed to score from within their 5 (on something like 5 or 6 attempts-on one drive) against Cal's defense! Take care of yourselves Beavs! Limit unforced errors, win the turnover battle, convert on some sustained drives (or make a few big plays) for points. Think it will be low scoring, 20's!
Go Beavs!

Shyne is out for the season with an ACL tear. Troy McCormick is doubtful. Utah is hoping that Zack Moss can get healthy. If not, Utah is down to two scholarship backs, Marcel Manalo, who is still recovering from a gunshot wound last year and true freshman Devonta'e Henry-Cole, who the Utes are trying to redshirt. I understand that Utah's best walk-on running back is also injured. Utah may attempt to convert a receiver, linebacker, or corner-back for the game. There is also some talk that Whittingham may try to convince would be starter, senior Joe Williams to un-retire. Also, Utah started a fourth-string center last week and were flagged for 10 false start penalties. Utah may look to convert another lineman into a center for this week's game. Leading receiver Tim Patrick is supposed to return after he was injured in Utah's win over USC three weeks ago. With all of the injuries, a lot of people in Utah are upset that Utah does not have a bye until November. This one looks to be low-scoring. I am thinking that the defense needs to keep Utah in the low 20's to win. (And that may be too many points. Utah has allowed more than 28 points once in the past two seasons, a 42-24 loss to USC in the Coliseum. Utah's defense allowed 35. Offense gave up a pick 6 with 1:07 left in the first half that Utah never really recovered from.) If Oregon State can create 2-3 big plays on offense against a very stout defense and 2-3 big plays on defense against a very beat up offense, that will hopefully be enough to win.

Could that be a way to defeat Utah? I'm wondering if DG's tendency to overthrow recievers is due to hanging on to the ball too long? Especially on the longer throws he really slings it out there on a rope, and if it's off by a smidge the receiver has no chance. Could he be throwing extra hard because he's held one count too long and feeling the pressure of the rush as well as the receiver being an extra 4-5 yds further down the field. If the ball comes out sooner then maybe the trajectory of the pass would be with a little more air under it. Just wonderin.

Think Ryan Katz. that dude had one pass, a laser beam. that is what Garretson does. throws a hard, straight ball. He can hit (mostly) slants, outs and things that require a hard fast straight line throw. putting air under it and dropping it into a garbage can at 40 yards is not in his tool set. getting it over the LBs and dropping it down on a deep post at 20 yards? probably not so much. We need to either develop the hell out of him fast, or simply play to his strengths. I think we did that at Cal.

I think we have an excellent shot at this game if Nall is 100% healthy, not sure if that'll be the case. He looked great the first drive vs. Minnesota, then came up slightly hobbled a drive or two later and continued to look that way until this last Saturday. I think he's been playing at less than 100% most of the season. Saturday he looked amazing until he had the foot thing happen.
If Nall is a little banged up I'm calling/guessing it 28-24, somebody wins. If he looks like he did this last week, 31-24 Beavers.

If you want a great chance to beat a Utah team this is it! They are down in every aspect of their game including D compared to past defenses. At this point they are as limited offensively as we are, maybe more with their injuries.
We're at home vs an overrated (Top 25 wise) team with more key injuries... after what we showed this should be a W. Unbelievable to think, but right now we're better than Utah overall... their plus is their coaching staff. In the weather, beat up they'll hang their hat on their D and really come after us and get short fields. On O they might revert to dinner of that trickeration they used at the lamdfill last year.

LOL it is most definitely not. Seriously, has he completed a pass downfield where the ball traveled more than 25 yards? I missed most of the Colorado game, but I can't recall any from the others. Actually I take that back. I do recall a bomb that Bolden made a great catch on, but not sure who threw it. Wilky is right, low scoring game. Hopefully the crowd is fired up and loud, I wish this game was at night. Anyone know the status of Nall? I'm going to go way out on a limb and say OS gets to 3-3 and 2-1 in conference. Utah's injury woes and poor road showing is just what this young confident group of kids needs the week after Cal. Who else do we get at home this year...UCLA, Oregon, Arizona? 5-4 or bust in conference dammit! But I'll take 2-7.

I'm with you LV. It's amazing what one victory will do for fans. Seven days ago I would have said we had less than a 50% to get win #2 this year. Now I'm looking through the schedule trying to see how OSU can get six wins. I got the value out of the season tickets last Saturday.

One playbook for one quarterback and a second for another. If it was the Civil War or something, I could see it, but you only have a week to implement what you are talking about. Much better idea just to let DG be quarterback. Did anyone see the Notre Dame-NC State game on Saturday in the middle of Hurricane Matthew? 10-3 NC State. 40 passes all game. The weather will only be slightly better for Utah-Oregon State. Team that throws less is going to win.

Beg to differ, but the weather is going to be much worse for the OSU/Utah game, maybe not as much rain, but punters kicking towards the scoreboard might see their punts fly back over their heads - the best running game is going to win this match.

Could be. It will assuredly be colder. Sustained wins were between 17 and 25 mph with a peak gust of 41 mph. It may be windier on Saturday but not my much, and I doubt that there is a 41 mph peak gust. Plus, as you said, I doubt that they get the 3.69" of rain during the game. Both field goals were with the wind and both kickers slipped while kicking the field goals. NC State's game winning touchdown was a 16-yard return of a blocked punt into the wind. 95 combined passing yards. 216 combined rushing yards. It looked miserable.
