That's the honest thing. Sometimes when you get in these doldrums that I've been in before, kids quit. And these kids haven't quit on offense, and I'm excited to see how they can come out and play. We need a break. We need something good to happen, rather than something negative to happen. Maybe a little momentum. From the Thursday Report: "These kids have been very business-like. I'm sure, in their own mind, there's those emotions that everything you're doing right now is the last time for a home game, and then next week it's the last time forever. But I haven't really sensed an extra effort or working harder or any of those things. I haven't sensed that at all." - GA on the seniors I don't even know what to make of this comment. Is it a compliment? Is he trying to motivate them to play harder? Gary Andersen media time is the best.

His observation is that he hasn't observed anything?

Is it a compliment? Is he trying to motivate them to play harder? Gary Andersen media time is the best. It really is kind of odd, especially when you eliminate the context. "Andersen was asked again about the seniors, a main theme of this week heading into the Beavers' final home game. He again expressed thanks to the group for grinding through a difficult final season and noted that they will always be remembered for helping start this rebuilding process. He added he has not noticed that group trying to savor these last moments with the team. "I don't say that in a negative way," Andersen clarified. "These kids have been very business-like. I'm sure, in their own mind, there's those emotions that everything you're doing right now is the last time for a home game, and then next week it's the last time forever. But I haven't really sensed an extra effort or working harder or any of those things. I haven't sensed that at all. "But I'm sure as it closes in on you in your own mind, you start to look at those things and it becomes more and more special. It'll really hit them when they jog out of the tunnel for the last time. That's when it usually hits them, and that's when it usually hits me, too. It's always tough to see those kids go." I think he's trying to impart the seniors have been working hard all along and continue to do that now rather than suddenly working hard because it is the end of the season.

I'll wait for future results on the field as pressers/coach speak mean ZIP, ZERO, NADA... too many coaches these days are so very ambiguous, flippant, arrogant, etc etc etc.... do you produce winners on and off the field is the measuring stick.
My personal feelings are not all that positive in how GA talks about HIS players in the public arena. It may be his personal style/motivational tool, but even thick skinned kids have to be growing tired of hearing some of his banter over and over and over. Say what you'd like in the locker room/individually/privately, but a lot of what comes out of his mouth reeks of disapproval/disparaging. Worse, he then usually follows it up with some, "... it's all on my shoulders... my responsibility...". Sometimes it seems very patronizing.
If results do not follow as soon as next year he could easily begin to lose kids. Kids are not that much different than us "idiots" on here... they want to see their work pay off in W's, bowl trips/swag, team/individual recognition/chance to play after college.

I am not sure Andersen puts as much thought into his words as you do. and I am not saying that to be snarky or a jerk or anything. that is not an attack. I just don't think he is talking riddles, or playing games or anything like that. He is straight forward and says what he says. He keeps mum on injuries as he probably should and he doesn't air dirty laundry. In short, I am not sure there is a why behind anything. I think he literally said what he thinks there with no motive.

LOL... you could be very well right too... but, again, who knows. And, is that a trait coaches should be a little better at??? I mean leaving things ambiguous that can be interpreted in multiple ways is not overly positive for the public image of the program... is it? I can tell you that several media types are not huge fans of GA just because of that. They ask a clarifying question of said ambiguous statement and he can get quite testy that someone could see what he said in that light. Like I said... I can live with a lot if the on/off field product produces (AND... we're not CHEATERS!)... so, although interesting to bat back and forth, coach speak means little.... REASONS or RESULTS baby!! I want to see some results (and I'd love to see at least some baby steps forward Saturday).

He strikes me as the kind of guy who remembers his anniversary based on the fact that he knows it's always the weekend before fall camp starts or something like that. He's all in and his sole focus is on winning football games and everything else is superfluous. I just love some of these comments. A few weeks ago on The Drive, he told the players to let the loss "burn in their asses." It's like stream of consciousness speech, and I find it amusing. He's like Les Miles at LSU.

"does this dress make me look fat?" "Yes.." Lets also not forget this is his 7th year as a HC, and 3rd in a power-5 conference. He has most of his coaching experience in small colleges and lets face it, there just is not that level of media scrutiny at that level. At Wisconsin, he was largely successful and immediately so. There just wasn't controversy and the wins were coming in. This is Andersen's first actual dance in the spotlight with a poorly performing team that is even still UNDER performing its already very low expectations. I'd give him some lee-way that is he probably frustrated with everything else and honestly isn't putting the care into his word-smithing that say, Riley did. A guy that did a tour of duty at USC, spent a lot of years in the CFL had that glorious NFL experience and all that to lean on...

BUT... although it is a board and responses are for the gen pop... I for one will NEVER compare him to Riley. MR is gone... like or dislike. He's gone. GA will be judged by me on what GA does, not by what MR did or would have done.

I'm unhappy with the realization that I'm less impressed by the week. I find many things Coach Andersen says about our players to be disappointing. Not sure how that's supposed to motivate any player if that's the intent. If you really are that unhappy with some of those guys for Christ's sake, just keep it to yourself. You're making yourself look petty. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it too.
