Once again: "I still maintain the biggest mistake of my coaching career was leaving Oregon State." I would have liked to have seen how Dennis would have done with the 2003 team. IIRC, that team finished top 10 nationally in both offense and defense, but turnovers banged what could have been a quite successful season. The transition to Riley's system from Erickson's derailed what should have probably been a 10-win group.

Maybe he's knows his audience or maybe he really does believe leaving was his biggest mistake. Seems like a pretty good gig. Decent money at the time before the explosion of coach salaries related to enormous tv deals and comparatively there is zero pressure in Corvallis. After the Fiesta Bowl he had goodwill to burn.
He's a small town guy and probably could've been successful long-term in Corvallis. BUT maybe we'd never have 9'er as head coach now and I believe the future is as bright in Corvallis as it's ever been.

IIRC, that team finished top 10 nationally in both offense and defense, but turnovers banged what could have been a quite successful season. The transition to Riley's system from Erickson's derailed what should have probably been a 10-win group. 10th in offense and 7th in defense. But 6th in turnovers and only 22nd in turnovers forced. The defense was actually better. The second best defensive yards per play in the country, behind only National Champion, LSU. The offense was very up-tempo back then comparatively. Lots of yards, but lots of plays. Oregon State's per play average was 38th. With the 2007 rules changes, the Beavers' defense quickly seemed more like a dinosaur. But Oregon State in 2003 had the second-most offensive plays in the country behind only Mike Leach's Air Raid offense at Texas Tech. The real issue was the run game. Jackson could not wrap his head around Riley's zone blocking scheme until the end of the season. Lots of dancing before that. 92nd/93rd best rushing attack in 1-A. Riley's offenses did not really get going until he got his guys in there in 2006.

Cesca was an odd bird. Was a decent kicker who still missed a lot of big kicks. Horrible in the Oahu Bowl, 1-for-4 I think? Missed vs. Washington. Missed a FG and PAT in 2000 Civil War. Missed twice vs. USC in the fourth quarter in 2001. He makes one of those, we go 6-5 and play in a bowl. He was nails in the Fiesta Bowl. But by mid-season 2001 he was awful and was replaced by Yliniemi, who was a much better kicker and one of the best in school history. I was so crushed when they lost to USC with a chance to break the Coliseum streak. After that I didn't think I would live to see it. Thank you Chance Nolan!!! I was at the U$C game, only game I've watched in the Collesium. Blew my mind they served beer in the stadium at the time. I don't want to steal the thread but does anyone remember that out route to Ochocinco in the Fiesta Bowl? I alowasy felt like the ND CB went for the pick and almost had it. Then was out of position to stop Chad... but I've always wondered if that was incomplete or picked if it would have dramatically impacted the game. After that first TD I think we had a sack on a 3rd down... the fumbled punt return that we recovered and all the mojo was ours. I will never forget the ND fans talking trash before the game started. Left in the 3rd quarter and never returned.

I had lunch once with Mitch Barnhart after Ericksons hiring (I was a nobody and Mitch graciously agreed to go). I asked who would have hired if Dennis had not contacted OSU, the leader for the job was Chris Tormey then at Idaho. Coach Erickson was a gift to long suffering Beaver fans and I will always be glad he came to OSU. Just a great football coach.

Wish we would of hired DE the first go around, OSU could have been in a very different place football wise.

He would have still gone to Miami in 1989 because the former WSU AD, at Miami at that time, still would have hired him. We would have been further along for the next guy, however. I think hiring Mitch Barnhart had more to do with our program's improvement than he's generally given credit for.

Price probably gets the Wazzu job instead of DE, and maybe Price goes to Miami instead of DE. I am not sure how long DE would have stuck it out in Corvallis back then, but I have to imagine that he would have done a better job than Kragthorpe. There was a ton of talent on that 1985 team. If DE could have kept Wilhelm healthy, the sky was the limit.
