I'm sure you all recall how, in late November last, Jonathan "Benedict Arnold" Smith just absolutely couldn't wait to get out of Corvallis to relocate to the state of Michigan. In the process, intentionally or not, he did his best to wreck OSU football and the athletic program in general.
Well guess what....what must have been a leader among his true "dream jobs" just came open...UCLA's Chip Kelly is heading for Ohio State. And dear oh dear, if Jonny Boy had just held his water for a little while longer, he might have been the top candidate to replace Kelly at UCLA...not so far from his childhood home in SoCal.
But no... Jonny is stuck now in lovely East fricking Lansing for years to come. Poor boy. My heart bleeds for him......NOT.

He took the first job he could land, and not a great job either. Sure, they have a place at the big boy table, but just barely. It sort of feels like it's working out for us in some ways. We had to go thru gag to get milk maid, and milk maid had to bail to get Bray. Given our current situation, it feels like Bray might just be the best guy for the job. He's smart. He's a football junkie. He's an all time Beaver, who said he didn't want to be a HC.......unless he landed the OSU job. What that says to me is he's not motivated to climb the bodies to the top like skim milk. That's a big deal.

Michigan State isn't just barely at the table. They will be linked to Michigan and they have the money to do so.

Michigan State isn't just barely at the table. They will be linked to Michigan and they have the money to do so. Maybe that was a poor choice of words. They are an "also ran" in the B1G, which isn't going to change, especially with more schools coming in. Any way you slice it, skim milk took on more pressure, and got on a shorter leash. Seems like a tough position if the expectation is to compete with upper echelon of the B1G

fuskies would have been his preference I think. Team played in the National Championship game and he was a coach there. Fucla is in his old backyard but a tough team to find success with.
I like how WE landed thus far

I like how WE landed thus far Huskies would not be very interested. The fan base has a pretty low opinion of him.

I'm not a huge Southern Cali fan, but great weather, and if you have money, you could get a fat pad out of the concrete jungle.

WHY is fUCLA a s%#tty job? Honestly. HUGE talent pool. Home field is the Rose Bowl. Westwood is pretty sweet. Santa Monica is close. Good school. Drop-dead-gorgeous women in ABUNDANCE. I agree it’s been a tough place to win for quite awhile. WHY? WHY? WHY?

Also, the Rose Bowl is way away from campus and their fan base sucks. Their AD department lost $23 million last year. Almost 4 times what we lost.

Maybe if you’re Joe Avezzano, but WTF does that have to do with coaching?

I agree it’s been a tough place to win for quite awhile. WHY? WHY? WHY? That is a good question. All of the positives that you mentioned should have translated to so much more consistent success through the years. They have had a boatload of gifted individuals come through Westwood, but UCLA will forever be acknowledged as the second best football program in SoCal, no matter how strong their season is, or how badly they embarrass the Trojans in their rivalry game in a given year. My theory is that the fans and even the school’s own administrations have a mindset that says that USC is a “football school”, and UCLA is a “basketball school”. It’s hard to argue that each is not among the ranks of the all-time best programs in college history in those respective sports. However, the Bruins in football are viewed similarly across the country like Trojans in hoops. There’s plenty of talent there, but history speaks clearly that their crosstown rivals are the real national brand. As a result, I feel like administrative and fan support, as well as general expectations for the perceived “weaker” of the two in each sport has often led to apathy and discouragement. It must get old to feel like you are constantly battling your rival for respect on a national level, when they are expected by pundits to always be relevant nationally and your program gets depicted as the little train that could. In many ways, hole has managed with $$ and shrewd self-promotion on the national stage, followed by on-field success and strong recruiting, to relegate the Beavs to that persona over the past couple of decades. Before the implosion of our conference, we were always able to come out looking pretty equal or better than the ducks in competition across all sports, but in football we definitely get the short end of the media stick.
