Among the many hundreds of NCAA athletes "portaling" are there any (or if so how many) that consider whether they owe any loyalty to the school/team they committed to other than giving their best effort for one year. I am not saying they should or should not, but in many cases the coaching, training, etc. they receive in that year may actually be the reason other schools want them.
I am concerned that we may be seeing a generation of young athletes (men and women) so full of themselves that everything is me, me, me.
I for one am not going to spend my time or my money cheering for and supporting a system in which success (i.e.) is clearly based almost totally on greed and who has the most money.
Why not just have the teams owned by and named as follows (these are just a few examples-I am sure the group will have have more!)
*The Walmart Shoppers
*The Amazon A---holes
*The Tesla Breakdowns
*The Cohn Brothers Clowns
P.S. Really hard to understand some of the thinking (or lack of it) that goes on. Dom Parova (sp?) chooses to transfer because OSU is now in the WCC. Supposedly because she will have a better chance for the big time (WNBA) by doing so. Yet two players from Gonzaga were drafted in the first two rounds of the WNBA draft. With Dom playing a very, very prominent role and improving at OSU would not her chances be at least as good and probably better than rolling the dice at the other programs she is considering? What am I missing here?

2ndGenBeaver,
Thank you for the informative and insightful information.
The point I am trying to make here is not that there would not always be some reason or another for a person to portal out every year. There, of course, would be.
My point is that there probably in many cases be just as much or more reasons to stay and develop as a player and a team.
However that all appears to be of no consequence in the current scheme of things.
Go Beavs!

I don't think we will ever get a satisfactory explanation.
you are right about the me, me, me......A lot of this IS generational. Disposable, instant gratification, self centered .....these are a large part of the character of today's young people.

I don't know what generation you are a part of flyfishinbeav, but I'm sure there is a segment of it that has the same characteristics you are complaining about. Just like I am sure there are "today's young people" that are into respect, hard work, the value of persistence and determination. I get tired of the "The problem with today's youth is...(fill in the blank)" I have 4 that are all in their 20's...all work hard. I know most of their friends/acquaintances. Most work hard and are respectful. I would suggest the problem isn't as much generational as it is societal. "Disposable, instant gratification, self centered" could describe a LOT of assholes I know that are in my generation...(and may be on this board). **Wow--ahole made it through the filter! whoda thunk?

I'm gen X....and yes, I see it even in myself, and my generation. In general, I'm not super excited about the future of our country, and the society my kids are inheriting.....just to give you my big picture

It doesn't take a lot of effort to discover that youth have been pathetic for quite a while now! 😇
"The young people of today think of nothing but themselves. They have no reverence for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint. They talk as if they knew everything, and what passes for wisdom with us is foolishness with them. As for the girls, they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behavior and dress." (From a sermon preached by Peter the Hermit in A.D. 1274) ----------------- GO BEAVS!!

To bring this back to the topic at hand - what I feel conflicted about is even as recently as 5 years ago, I would have looked forward to watching Dom contribute and grow for 4+ years, get to know her better through interviews and news features, and feel this affinity with a fellow alumnus. Now, thanks to seemingly *everything* getting commoditized and monetized, the NIL has made the student-athlete a fleeting concept. The conflict comes from the fact that the student-athlete has every right to chase their own enlightened self interests (I went to school to learn monetizable skills as well), it's just that this NIL thing feels like yet another shakedown - just like the insane prices for a bottle of water at the stadium while I'm watch Dom, to the fact that every transaction asks for a tip, to the fact that student-athletes now flitter from opportunity to opportunity at a rate that makes creating any bond impossible...... And this hurts even more (back to this thread) because I think Dom is a superstar in the making, and I would have enjoyed seeing her progression as an Oregon State superstar. I get it, but I don't have to like it. And it's not only because I'm an old codger, but because I am someone who is still digesting "progress" in the NCAA athletics world. And realizing that this last bit of progress has left me behind, and my days of college sports fandom are quickly coming to a close. Go Beavers!

I've felt for sometime now that adolescence, being a subculture in society past, is now the dominant one. Translation, the tail wagging the dog 🐕

Translation, the tail wagging the dog 🐕 All you have to do is look at our public school system. Kids can basically do whatever they want, with little consequence. The teachers have less, and less authority. The troubled/confused kids run the show, and typically their parents back em up......it's a s%#t show!

Must be tough...
