We have all been down this road. This entire thread is an example of the fascinating human psyche. People are so sold on Mike Riley being the problem in Corvallis, that now that his team laid a major turd and lost their starting QB in the process, people want to use this as an proof. Riley is garbage. GA is the answer. But MR pooping the bed does not make 2-10 and now 2-7 any better, any more correct, or look any prettier. It sure isn't making GA's job here look good. We might have a win or two left on the schedule, but you need to stop and take stock at snickering at a coach that lost big to a top 10 team on the road (again) a week after losing in OT to another top 10 team on the road, but still has his team at 7-2 when your own team is 2-7. And lets face it, it ain't like GA has kept a lot of scores close either... the absurdity here is that there are only 2 teams with winning records in NE's 7 wins. No comparison at all to the beavs. NE was just way over-rated and their own fans even knew it before Wisconsin game.

B) They played the schedule as laid out C) They have 7 wins D) You're right NO comparison at all to the Beavs

The reality is, MR is in his 2nd season at Nebraska and they're going to win 10 games and be first place in their division and playing for the conference title - and he's not doing it with a stereotypical laser-accurate pocket passer, he and Danny designed an offense that takes advantage of the pieces that they have. That's pretty good, and I'm happy for him because he's a good man who did a lot for OSU. I don't feel mad when people bash him anymore, it's honestly so ridiculous that I can't really manage much more than an eye roll. I skipped from the first page to the last but baseba1111 asked the question on pg1 about whether Riley would be still be beloved if the University had stepped up and invested in the football program back in 06-07-08-09 when the program was hot... Unfortunately I don't really think so. I think it would have still just prolonged the inevitable. I hoped at one point in time that Riley would be our Bobby Bowden but the truth is, you have to inject new blood into a mid-major program periodically to generate excitement, or else the program stagnates. It's just the world we live in. I'm all in for the new guy, he's our coach now and I am looking forward to him having some success in the future. Really well put OA. Although I think most would have been thrilled with Bill Snyder, which often seemed to be the narrative and comparison. I think I'll skip this board for a week if Minnesota happens to wins this weekend in Lincoln.

I think that there was a recruiting problem in 2008 and 2009 that truly manifested itself in 2011. But, let's say you give Riley a completed phase 3 in 2010 or a Valley Football Center or give Riley the resources to retain recruiting maven positional coaches. Let's say you only get one more recruit a year. Let's say you recruit a wide receiver that can fill in for Kevin Cummings in 2013 or give Richard Mullaney a week off to rest his turf toe up, and you make one more play in 2013 in the Civil War and pull of the upset or make one more play in the Arizona State game that sends the game off in a more Oregon State-friendly trajectory. Let's say you can improve the team a couple points in 2012, win Washington and Stanford and play an overrated Kansas State in the Fiesta Bowl, going 12-1 with a top 5 finish or beat Washington, go 10-2, and finish off a Texas in San Antonio to go 11-2 with a top 15 finish or better. Winning creates excitement, which increases donations, publicity, and recruits' interest. Oregon State was rarely far off from breaking through. It just never happened. But, if Riley got that momentum, he did not seem like he was going to let it go. At the very least, he would have one recruiting class that would have had a heck of a 2016 or 2017 that would have set up well for 2020-2022, etc. Anyway, whether he was there or not, I never got the feeling that the program was going anywhere with BDC at AD. An AD with good ideas that supported the program and promoted fan interest both inside and outside of the stadium with Riley at the helm could have created the right conditions for a very successful team. Riley with BDC created a very good team in several years but never a jaw-dropping great team.

I'll give you a hint... that you and others here know well... we're not and never will be an elite program and draw many elite recruits. Hence we need a coach and staff that are exceptional evaluators of talent, can further develop that talent, and can x and o with the best. We, for the most part, had an unknown coach/OC become a well respected HC. He and staff coached up lesser recruits and did indeed get us close with a bean counter AD and no over riding support from the Prez. BDC should have been gone long before he was let go. Almost everyone here would take that "closeness" about now. With a supportive Prez, new AD, and the current financing and 2 years of better developing than we current see we. Problem is, we no longer have that caliber of coach and staff. We're further away than we've been since 1996. We better have a huge recruiting class that can play right away to make any kind of strides next year.

In my opinion, this team is much closer to being a solid team than 1996. The huge problem is the lack of a real offensive coordinator. With a great hire, this team could have a winning season next year.

Comparing this season to 1996 is insane - we are frustratingly close in a majority of games while playing THE most difficult schedule in the nation to this point. Intellectually dishonest or ignorant.
Oh, wait, the resident board troll made that comment. Enough said.

That GA and his Staff will overcome the deficiencies we see in the teaching part of football and get better players ready to play sooner. If GA doesn't out recruit what Riley did, I guarantee you he utterly fails at OSU ala Dan Hawkins (a few wins maybe a bowl game and then a nosedive). Because from my perspective he is trying to build Utah 2.0 without the inherent Mormon/Polynesian recruiting advantage. Basically a rugged D and somesort of trial by error offense that sort of changes season by season and will be competitive (but not overwhelming) as long as his QB is upright which rarely is more that 3 or 4 games (see Johnson, Brian Wilson Travis). So it's all on recruiting, player development at OSU isn't something that you can count on like the past, at least on offense.
