Bash away about the McMaryion run-off because that has legitimacy, but El Dio would not have made a difference here and nobody foresaw Kempt doing anything here.
Also, I don't know where you get the "mind-numbing" offensive talent going into 2015. Whoever was going to play QB was a huge drop off from Mannion and our best RB (Woods) was consistently hurt. Yes, Mullaney was a decent receiver, but I would not consider him and Bolden to be "mind-numbing". We were going to have a serious rebuilding year in 2015. Definitely not as bad as what actually happened, but Riley would have struggled with that team also. Riley may have won 4 or 5 games with that team.
Since LDR was actually the kid getting the mop-up PT behind Mannion in 2014, I'm not sure where your depth chart info is coming from. And, the point isn't really where these kids slotted in the depth chart, anyhow. The point is - the QB play for this program the past 3 years has absolutely SUCKED (outside of a few 3M games), and even a "non-game-changer" like LDR would have been an upgrade of major magnitude over what CGA ran out there. LDR, 3M, and Kempt are worlds better QBs than the Collins, Garretson, Luton trio. As for the "mind-numbing" comment - I wouldn't use that adjective, but we did have like 9 or 10 offensive starters returning for 2015, which should have made for at least a pretty decent offense. The defense is where MR would have had trouble. This narrative is tiresome. For the last time the team lost a lot of players in 2014 and finished 5 and 7. The next year was as close to guaranteed worse as you can have in the world when predicting things. Under Riley the team always lost more games the season after a quarterback graduated. Under Riley the team always lost more games after graduating more than 6 starters on defense. 2015 was the first year that both were going to happen. I take issue with the cupboard is bare comments like others because I believe in our players. Andersen never said the cupboard was bare. A lot player development needed to happen because of so many holes to fill. This development did not happen. A realistic viewpoint did not see an improved offense in 2015 when predicting because we have almost zero experience at quarterback to distribute the ball. 2015 was a rebuilding year and the offense was not going to find improvement from the previous year unless we saw some drastic improvement in coaching (we did not). The offense of 2014 was almost completely hinged on Mannion. Nobody performed better without him there. Some of that could be scheme, but that is only a partial explanation. The true numbers on returning starters on offense in 2015 is closer to 7. The last game played we returned 9 of the starters, but most of the games had between 4-5 starters that graduated or medically retired. At least 2 of the starters in the last game of 2014 was due to injuries. Starters that did not return include: Anderson, Sapolu, Weinreich, Hamlett, Mannion, and Grant Bays. Obviously, not all these players were always starting depending on the personnel needs. Counting 6 OL as returning starters does not make sense because you still only start the best 5. Citing that 3 quarterbacks are starting on other teams only points out that Riley and staff identified several good quarterbacks, but only 1 of them would have started for the Beavers. Would a different coach than Andersen been able to convince all 3 to stay, probably not. Take Kempt for example, it is almost assured that he would have never started under Riley because he was buried on the depth chart. So would Riley have been able to keep him on roster as a reserve? I really do not know. LDR was almost guaranteed the starter if Riley stayed so we can pretty much guarantee him still here. Then there is 3M, would he really have stayed if he was beat out by the LDR. I am guessing he would have not. So that puts us in a similar situation where 2 of our 3 former quarterbacks are starting on other teams. When Andersen took over there were 7 scholarships used on quarterbacks. Almost everyone in the industry feels that this is too many. This does not mean that Andersen chose wisely which ones to retain. In 2015 under Riley I have almost zero doubt that the offense would not have been better, because that is what happened every time a new quarterback was started. Let's dispel the myth that the offense should have been incredible compared to 2014. So the only way to improve the offense in 2015 was by using an offense that did not have such a steep learning curve. We tried that and unfortunately it turned out worse. Finally, Andersen did a poor job of coaching this team on the field. A few players having success elsewhere has almost nothing to do with the poor coaching, but the on the field product does. Most of the lamented "lost" players were from an overstaffed positions.

I do not have to rip Riley, when Riley had Florida's starter as the starter-in-waiting in 2015 with Iowa State's starter as his backup and Fresno State's starter as third string. The offensive talent that was lined up in 2015 is mind-numbing. If BDC had not chased off Langs, both 2014 and 2015 (and probably 2016 and 2017, as well) could have been very fun to watch. (In an alternate reality, Langs stayed and BDC got chased off. Maybe Banker gets chased off and someone else brought on to take Oregon State over the top?) Riley had Vanderveen ahead of both Kempt and El Dio in 2014. Also, I'm sorry, but El Dio sucks. Florida won some games last year when he started, but that was because of their defense. Our line would have been terrific if they didn't have to pick up a new scheme. Defense would have been an issue, but sometimes they have surprised under those coaches.

I don't think they went anywhere. 3M's still the #26 rated passer in official NCAA efficiency ratings, and anyone with eyeballs and a pulse knows we would be better off with him than our current guy. Kempt just made the news by beating a 2nd top 5 team. Pretty impressive feat that deserves its own thread. SaveSave

By the way, nowhere ever in any of my posts have I ever said we'd be better off without him. Quite the opposite! I wish he had stayed, he'd be starting now, but playing much stiffer competition. From Ostate: It could be their schedule too...
They have beaten:
1-6 Incarnate Word
1-7 Nevada
1-7 San Jose State
3-4 New Mexico
6-2 San Diego St
and UNLV is 2-5
The addition of 3M has really lifted this team to a higher level and I suspect they have a good chance to win out (current opponents on the schedule are a combined 15-21)... The Boise St game at the end of the season should be a good one!I wish Kempt had stayed too. Pretty remarkable story. Further, I wish his new teammate Garrett Owens would have stayed. Juke El Trio too! Some monumental errors in judgment and talent identification. I for one am relieved that we get to start with a blank slate and don't owe $12 mil.

I do think that 2015 offense had a decent chance to be good had they maintained a pro-style. The defense, which would probably have been bad regardless, might have kept them from showing their potential, since they often couldn't get themselves off the field. Mullaney, Bolden, Villamin, Smith, Woods, and a very decent O-line to go with the "rookie" QB could have made some noise if they got their chances.

I'm not claiming that we were stocked with a cupboard full of great players; I am just pointing out that we would have been able to surround a new pro set qb with a decent to excellent group of skill players and a serviceable o-line. Instead we get a freshman great athlete with limited passing experience who is perfect for the read option surrounded by a bunch of players set for a pro offense. Kind of like the handoff from Kragthorpe to Pettibone, with similar results.

Anderson started 3 games, so I'd hardly consider him a lost starter. Sapolu was among the top 5 OL with the most starts, but Weinreich was not. Seumalo was returning from a medical year, but there were more guys returning with starting experience. Sapolu IIRC, missed a lot of the season with injury. Bays was a returning OL, but had to medically retire, which I believe was the following year. Still, the OL wasn't hurting for guys with starting experience even after Bays retired. You're counting guys who were only starting because of injury, and I'm counting returning guys who weren't starters because of injury. (but Anderson still doesn't count). Point is, we had a s%#t-ton of experience returning to the squad at every position except QB. Guys with multiple starts at every position. SaveSaveSaveSave

Your argument appears to be degenerating from an actual argument to a technical argument. Oregon State's graduating seniors on offense were Tyler Anderson, Connor Hamlett, Sean Mannion, Iona Prichard, and Jacob Wark. You make no argument that Prichard and Wark were starters, because they were not. I can find no instance in which Tyler Anderson started a single game in 2014. He had nine touches all year. Your putting him in your list tends to undercut everyone else on your list. His loss was catastrophic for Oregon State in 2015. How the Beavers even managed to win two games is truly beyond me. Connor Hamlett and Sean Mannion started every game. Garrett Weinreich was the original starting LG. He suffered a knee injury in the very first game and did not start again. He seemed to be nearing full health at the end of the year. After Andersen was hired, it was announced that Weinreich was medically retiring. (Too many linemen!) Grant Bays was the original starting RG. He under-performed and was replaced by Fred Lauina. Sapolu took over his spot before Sapolu was lost for the year. Despite not being injured during the season, after Andersen was hired, it was announced that Bays was medically retiring. (Too many linemen!) Roman Sapolu entered the season as the third-string center. After it was announced that Seumalo would not play in 2014, Sapolu was promoted to second-string. Sapolu replaced Weinreich at LG after Weinreich was injured. Bays was benched before the California game for under-performing. Fred Lauina was promoted to starting LG and Sapolu moved to RG. Sapolu started to begin the 2013 season but suffered a foot injury in the Hawai'i game (game 2) that ended his season. Sapolu suffered a neck injury in his first game at RG in 2014 and chose to medically retire. Oregon State lost Hamlett and Mannion to graduation. Sapolu medically retired. Andersen ran off Bays and Weinreich. Anderson was not a starter. While very talented backups, neither Bays, Sapolu, nor Weinreich was a legitimate OL starter. Oregon State returned all nine starters plus Seumalo. Bays and Weinreich were casualties of Gary "Captain Queeg" Andersen. (Too many linemen!)
