From the ESPN article - "Sources told ESPN's Adam Rittenberg that the search firm Oregon State hired is targeting candidates with some head-coaching experience and ties to the Northwest. Washington offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith, a former quarterback at Oregon State, is expected to be among the top candidates for the job." Dang, that's vague. For example, Corey Hall meets that - high school head coach. If you read it to mean head coaching in the Northwest, that could be a lot of names. Skip Belly, Mike Bellotti (has he removed his name from consideration yet?), Rich Brooks, Dennis E, Mike R, Steve Sarkisian, the guitar playing Neuheisel, Tyrone Willingham, Paul Wulff, Bill Doba, Paul Petrino, Robb Akey, Nick Holt, Baldwin, Nigel Burton and other guys that are likely +75. Another note and I'll use one of wilky's tricks. Throwing out Karl Dorrell's one good year at UCLA, his record was 25-25. Throwing out Neuheisel's two poor years, his record was 13-13.

Oddly, between the two I'd be hard pressed to not pick the Weasel. At this time.

I like how it says they are targeting candidates with some head-coaching experience and mentioned Jonathan Smith in the next sentence who has no head-coaching experience. That's some great writing right there by ESPN!

Or is that just the way things are done in college football these days? I see lots of speculation of who "should" be finalists, but no real rumors in regards to who the next coach might be.

My biggest problem with Neuheisel - lying to his boss. At UW his AD asked him if the reports that he'd travelled to California to talk to 49'ers about HC position were true. He lied to her face and denied it. That ultimately cost him his job. Dishonesty and stupidity are a bad combination. Football wise I think he is very experienced and capable. Footballwise, I think that he is experienced but incapable. Each of his three teams tailed off after three years, after the last guy's recruits graduated. He can maintain the current team for two years. After that, he gets lost. He cannot coach offense. He cannot recruit. He is (or at least was) a bad human being. In short, he is a cancer. He has left each of the programs he was at in a worse spot than he found them. He is not the right guy for Oregon State. For lack of a better analogy, he is Hillary Clinton. He has a ton of experience, but most of his experience is middling to bad. Find a better analogy.

One big drawback to him is his abuse of quarterbacks. He is not "quarterback friendly" and is in their face constantly. He destroys whatever confidence a young QB has by putting the entire offensive execution on the QB. He is the antithesis of Peterson or Helton when it comes to QB development.
I think one of the pitfalls Barnes faces is to resist the temptation of hiring an old experienced retread in hopes of changing OSU's trajectory quickly. Barnes will likely have several of these veteran coaches that are either sliding backward or currently out of coaching. Of course there are exceptions to the rule - John Gruden anyone?
