Myself included. We are having the worst season imaginable. We suck! The only game we won, and very possibly might win all year was against a WINLESS Big Sky team, and we had to come from behind, at home, to do it!!! Most of us have been drained of hope, positivity, and overall joy from Beaver football. This is a dark time in OSU football.
Yet, when presented with the news that a former NATIONAL CHAMPION WINNING COACH, a coach with a record of 114-34 in the SEC, coached two teams to 14 straight bowl games winning 8 of them, a coach of the LSU Tigers, may be interested in coaching Oregon State....he's not good enough??? He'd be a disaster? What world am I living in now? We're the disaster! To think that somehow we are entitled to stick our nose up at a coach with his credentials is truly bizarre. But to make it even more twisted, many would prefer Jeff Tedford! Or an untested coordinator. Or an interim coach with no real coaching experience, but long on energy.
I'm not saying he's absolutely the guy that OSU should hire, but for heck sakes, we should all be relieved and proud that a coach like Miles even mentions Oregon State. The rest is up to the AD of course, but I'd sure as hell start there.
Funny.

However should also be tempered with success at a top ten storied program doesn’t mean success at OS Personally more interested in if he’s still the guy that helped turn Okie around. He’s certainly on the list but if he’s the guy hopefully someone makes the right decision.

My only fear with Les Miles is that he comes in next season, wins 8 games and jumps back to the SEC or some other big program for his swan song, last hurrah into coaching. Les Miles will IMMEDIATELY fix our defense. IMMEDIATELY give us possibly the best recruiting class in recent history and IMMEDIATELY improve our overall status. Of every realistic available name, his has the most weight. You'd be a complete moron to pass on Miles, if you had the chance to get him. I mean, I like Tedford, but come on now...

It's about fit. What works elsewhere might not work here. Our last coach should be exhibit A for this. Dennis Erickson's record at Miami was 63-9. Everywhere else? 84-72. Dennis was a great coach, but it didn't make Arizona State successful.
Les Miles might be the guy for OSU. Beau Baldwin might be the guy. I don't care who it is, but let's get it right. This whole "we have to hire Les Miles because he's Les Miles" is exactly why we hired Gary Andersen less than a week after the job came open. We can't make that mistake again. Let's interview as many people as we feel necessary to make the decision. To me, it's not about finding a person that is going to win instantly with a bunch of juco talent. It's not about finding someone who is going to be here for a decade or longer. It's about finding the person who can establish OSU as a program good in-state talent wants to play for, that can win a press conference to get fans re-engaged, and someone who is present in the community. Wayne Tinkle is at quite a few other sporting events. I see him jogging around town occasionally. I know Pat Casey is a regular at a local church. I've seen Laura Berg and a few other coaches at local restaurants during lunches from time to time. Aside from one time I saw Gary Andersen at Costco with an assistant coach, I never saw him outside of Reser. I want a coach who is going to go to the farmer's market with his family or see a movie with his wife occasionally, not a robot that lives and breathes football and sleeps in his office.

It would be one thing if this were a total rebuild job. It's not in spite what the record says. The pieces necessary to win 6-8 games next year are here with the right coach. There would be instant buy in from the players with Miles and the importance of that to a quick turnaround can not be overstated.

He's got an NC ring, his teams were often in contention for the SEC title, and he took Oklahoma State to respectability. His defenses were terrifying and most of his offenses were decent in a very tough conference. I don't get the knock on him. At all.

Of every realistic available name, his has the most weight. You'd be a complete moron to pass on Miles, if you had the chance to get him. I mean, I like Tedford, but come on now... Immediately fix our D? Based on what? Aside from Ugwoegbu (who has already threatened to transfer) and maybe Xavier Crawford, is there anyone who is going to be on Defense next year that you trust? Our seven redshirting defensive backs can't all play at the same time. Immediately bring in the best recruiting class? Based on what? For instance, according to 24/7 sports there are two 4* offensive tackles that we have extended offers to that have not committed. Pensei Sewell has 24 other offers, including Alabama, Oregon, USC, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Florida, LSU, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Arkansas, and ASU. You think that if we hire Les Miles (who as you say is probably only going to be around for a year or two), that kid is going to bypass all those offers to play major college football at programs that are better off right now just to sign with Les? You think any other kid with dozens of offers is going to say "1-11, no big time talent on the roster, players threatening to transfer if the interim guy isn't hired...but LES MILES!" It's not a good situation right now. I don't think this is the time to shoot for the stars hoping to land in the clouds. I think it's time to find the guy that's going to get you in the clouds and keep you there. If we get a guy like Les Miles, it becomes about playing for Les Miles, not about playing for Oregon State. Once he leaves, then what? I want Oregon State to be the face of Oregon State. I think Mike Riley worked here because he was a reluctant face of the program. He wasn't out there beating his chest, giving crazy quotes, saying "look at me." It was always about OSU first. I don't want Mike Riley back...I want someone who makes it feel like it did when Mike Riley was the coach.

I'd re-state it as just: fans are funny, as well as: the opinions we often ascribe to a fan base are probably not the actual opinions of most of said fan base. You get the same dumb-looking comments in every fan base. It's why AD's don't listen to fans. There are smart fans, dumb fans, opinionated fans, all kinds of fans all over. You can't take the opinion of a few fans - even the most passionate fans - as the reasoned pulse of an entire fan base. The only thing we can be sure of that this fan base wants is to see the Beavers be winners.

Can we revoke the privileges of anyone who thought Gary Andersen was a "home run hire" from commenting on who our next coach should be?

Its about understanding that past success doesn't guarantee future success. There is a reason that eventually every coach drops off. Things change, they change. Maybe Miles isn't at that stage (although his last few seasons at LSU gave at least the appearance of a drop off). Bobby Bowden coached till he was 80 but his last 8-9 years were not as good as previous years. He retires and FSU was instantly better (maybe they'd have been as good with him but we don't know). Lou Holtz was great at Arkansas and Notre Dame but average (2 Bowls in 6 years) at South Carolina. At some point a coach isn't the same guy they were at an earlier point of their career. Miles may not be at that point but I think some of you need to pump the brakes and at least take a second to think about the possibility that he is.
