Angrybeav site claiming this was leaked from one of the pay sites. If true, how do you feel about it?
I like Riley, but I feel like him being on staff in an official capacity will undermine Smith with players , and even some of the staff if they are former beavers. Don’t think Riley would do this intentionally, but the threat is still there.

Mike Riley is one of the few former Head Coach's that could actually pull that off. He has the exact personality you want for such a situation. Dennis Erickson would worry me much more.

It would be the best of both worlds we get Mike Riley's knowledge with JS's decision making. Imagine Mike just being able to focus on getting us a good quarterback and getting him ready for games. I have beaver bumps just thinking about it. Go beavs!

I’d still be tempted to put him on the defensive side as a DB coach if he’s going to be a position coach on the team. He’d be a heck of a QB coach under normal circumstances, my issue is more appearances and stupid media inevitably focusing on student coaching the teacher questions. Along with the “who’s offense is it?” questions, I’d think it would go better to have that on the defensive side rather than the offensive side.

Every paid assistant needs to be willing and able to spend long hours on the road recruiting. Will Riley’s heart be in it? If not, he’d be better utilized as a consultant. Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and you can’t sacrifice a single spot on the staff.

If true, then there's a good chance one of Nebraska's redshirt QB's follows him. I read an article that quoted Gebbias' dad saying it would be a big mistake to let MR go at Ne braska etc... the main gist of it was, his son committed to Nebraska to learn under MR.

At this point, I will trust that 9er has a plan and if MR is a part of it in any capacity, I'm ok with that! If he is not part of the plan, that's ok too.
Go coach Smith!! Go Beavs!!

He doesn't let his ego get in the way of what he wants to teach. Beavs would be lucky to have him in any capacity.

Nope, he will put too big of a shadow over Smith. I don't question his ability but its too soon for Riley to be an assistant at OSU.

Riley is too much of a "name" at this point to allow the new staff to settle in. The surest sign of intelligence is to be able to fully accept two diametrically opposite ideas at the same time.

I'd worry about this too... but I think Riley is pretty selfless for the most part. He'd be one of the few coaches out there that could pull it off. say way you want about him as a HC. he is a helluva offensive mind. He has put a lot of QBs in the NFL.

[ It’s not that Riley would do anything intentionally, it’s just his presence alone. Especially if some of the staff members are his former players. If I’m niner, I have him up in my office to watch film once a week as an unpaid consultant. Have a nice dinner and have a brew and break down film.

Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and you can’t sacrifice a single spot on the staff. I feel like Riley would be able to handle the rigors of recruiting fine. He loves the game and still has passion (even if his time has past to run an entire program) and he’s not an ego guy, he loves OSU and Corvallis and has a great track record with QBs and receivers. In particular, I’d love it if even more than having a region, he was the guy recruiting QBs and receivers. I know that realistically assistant coaches don’t just recruit position groups, but if it was possible here, IMO that would be the perfect arrangement.
