Every paid assistant needs to be willing and able to spend long hours on the road recruiting. Will Riley’s heart be in it? If not, he’d be better utilized as a consultant. Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and you can’t sacrifice a single spot on the staff. While I am simpathetic to the idea we need recruiters on staff I don’t think that is the only consideration. There have been numerous programs that have fallen flat on their face even with multiple top 20 classes when there wasn’t anyone on the staff who could teach or evaluate those players. Riley recruited well at Nebraska so I don’t see any reason for worry now. Besides he was really successful at the diamond in the rough type players and we could still use that here.

Other than the issues others have already stated in this thread, the issue I see is MR’s ultra traditional drop back passer pro style/Langsdorf theme he sticks to coming in conflict with the CP/UW/Boise State type of offense we anticipate JS will run. Not sure those two approaches can be reconciled.

My opinion: No Thanks. Prefer that JS hires someone who will run his offense.
Riley and Erickson should both remain as consultants, outside of the program IMO.
Go Beavs!

Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, and you can’t sacrifice a single spot on the staff. I feel like Riley would be able to handle the rigors of recruiting fine. He loves the game and still has passion (even if his time has past to run an entire program) and he’s not an ego guy, he loves OSU and Corvallis and has a great track record with QBs and receivers. In particular, I’d love it if even more than having a region, he was the guy recruiting QBs and receivers. I know that realistically assistant coaches don’t just recruit position groups, but if it was possible here, IMO that would be the perfect arrangement. Like the sound of that. Has coached two Blitinikoff winners here, and as you point out has put several QB's in the league. He can help find, recruit, and coach up the next Cooks, Wheaton, JR, ......... Would be a tremendous asset to JS's staff and program as a recruiter and assistant. I think some people are underestimating 9'ers leadership capabilities to manage such a situation. Don't underestimate 9'er and his willingness to do what it takes to build a strong program here.

Are you kidding? Yes, all day.
Anyone opposed to this, there are 3 OSU Beavers playing in the NFL, 2 from like 10 years ago. I don't care who their "qb coach" was on those teams, their QB coach was Mike Riley.
You don't want that?
Edit...I'm not sure it matters what offense is being run unless OSU is playing a read option and no passing is involved. Even then, I think Riley can at least help with fundamentals and reads. Jake Browning has a ton of bad habits...so does Cam Newton, but you know. That's the job of the QB coach to teach the kids the fundamantals of passing, reading defenses, etc.
I think Jake Luton had come along in 2008 and played for Riley he could have been everything Mannion was by the end of his tenure...with a lot more shake

I think Smith and Riley would each be able to handle perception and controversy, and understand who is in charge. I would be more inclined to wonder how the new Offensive Coordinator would perform in that environment. Obviously that depends on who is chosen for that job, but I would imagine that would be taken into consideration with all involved. I think Riley could fit into the "Grandpa" role nicely.

The one thing everyone consistently talks about with Coach Riley is how humble he is.
If there is one guy in all of college football who can move back to his hometown, ride his bike to work and smile all day long as a QB coach, it is Michael Joseph Riley. I honestly think if Oregon State started winning games again - and they would - I think you would see him shy away from the spotlight save the beautiful "I'm having the time of my life" article from Eggers.
St. Dennis would never be able to function in that same capacity (as an assistant) under CJS without this type of effect being a valid concern, even though he served as an OC in his last coaching position at another Pac-12 school.
Coach Smith needs all the help that he can get. It would be silly to turn away Riley's wealth of knowledge, eye for talent, ability to develop quarterbacks and recruiting ability just becaue you want Smitty to look like he did it "all by himself". He should assemble the best staff he can get, full stop.

If Riley could bring this kid with him, it would be a win all the way around. He had already committed to Nebraska when Riley was relieved of his duties. Smart kid with Oregon ties.

I will say this, if he has a few 4 star Nebraska commits that would come with him I'd be more open to this idea.

Petras passed for 500 plus yesterday. Dukart, even though I would rather see him in a baseball uniform, is a good QB. Petras says he is tripping to Iowa before signing day. Locking those two guys would be a great start.

Last time I looked at his Twitter account he was all in for Nebraska.

I stand corrected, he must have been a Sooner the whole way. I think I saw this post and saw the name 'Riley' and was thinking Mike Riley. Oops.

Locking those two guys would be a great start. Petras > any Husker QB recruit. Sanders is a 2020 kid so Petras being better is irrelevant; they will need a QB recruit in the 2020 class too.
