Smith said he was hoping to hit the road recruiting Sunday, or Monday at the latest. I'm getting a little antsy that we haven't at least heard about coordinator hires. I hate to be a concern troll, but I'm a little worried that Smitty might find himself alone in being excited about this job. Hopefully his strong recruitment message about OSU isn't already falling flat among potential assistant coaches...
Somebody talk me off the ledge...

Do you want fast hires, or the right hires? Would rather he get it right if that means taking a little longer than getting it done just for the sake of getting it done.

I would be willing to bet he has several people lined up?! Sunday's aren't huge news days either usually. The other thing is that some of his candidates may still be coaching (bowl games). He has the resources to bring people in; his own connections, Erickson and Riley's connections are always there too. Lastly, he may have people going with him to meet up with the current commits, it's just there is no official contracts yet? They are cutting it really close on the "holiday break" deadline (no contact time) too, his priorities are in order if you ask me. Go Beavs!

Coach has guys on board. No need to announce until they've been thru the hiring/approval process. People worked yesterday and today to vet and get paperwork in order.
It's got to be official before the coach and school can announce. It must be official before asst coaches can go out to represent the school. But, perfectly fine for the new guys to talk to their recruits off the record. Which I'm assuming has/is taking place.
Later tonight maybe, tomorrow and Tuesday will be "busier". 😁

Thanks Baseba1111, appreciate you walking many of us back off the ledge. Hope you have some inside sources... But it would make sense to not be “premature” and have egg on your face as new coach, announcing a hire (or hires) you have to take back. I’ve been concerned / or maybe the word is just super anxious...wanting to know the assistants will be. Been going to the Oregonian sports page and/or this forum every couple hours to look and see there was info. Obviously I’m not alone.

There is also a legal waiting period. Can't announce until the job posting has closed since they are government employees going through legal red tape. We could have a director of football operations by Tuesday and coaches by Thursday.

We could have a director of football operations by Tuesday and coaches by Thursday. The unfortunate thing is that if Niner has to wait until, let’s say, Thursday to officially employ his staff on the recruiting trail, that could really impact this year’s recruiting class (and not in a good way). With the quiet period leading into early signing fast approaching, we can only hope that new prospects who could be flipped wait to sign in February. There simply wouldn’t be time to get the ear of all those prospects of JS is essentially going solo on this for the next several days. I’m confident that he will have time to re-recruit the players on the current roster over the break, and solidify the kids who’ve already verballed to the Beavs before the dead period. He might persuade some kids he was recruiting to Montlake to consider coming to Corvallis. However, if we get some of the guys we’re hoping for as assistants, I feel like given any time to work this we could flip some good talent, and/or get in the conversation for some that are weighing options and not officially decided. This new early signing deal is a good thing overall, IMO, but when you change coaches in late November/early December, it can really affect the first major event in a new coach’s effort to get positive momentum going in his program.

December 18, 2017, through January 11, 2018: [applicable to all prospective student-athletes (see Bylaw 13.02.5.5.2)]: Dead Period
What is a dead period? During a dead period a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools.
Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period. I’m most concerned that a ton of prospects will sign elsewhere during the early period.

FWIW while they may have a legal timeframe to announce, nothing to stop Niner telling a recruit that XXX could be a name they would possibly work with, wink wink.
