Stars are overrated and can be deceiving. We should actually have good guys coming back and new guys coming in! Should be a great competition with Luton probably leading the way. Smitty recruited Luton when he was at Boise St. Luton, if cleared, could be coached up to be a very legit QB in this conference! Let's hope Seth Collins comes back at WR (healthy and ready) as well! Go Beavs! I agree with almost all of this except the part about having good guys coming back. Luton could be a very legit QB but if he goes down again is there a serviceable backup? I don't see that there's a risk in bringing in someone, who is a know quantity to CJS, to compete for the starting or backup roll. Especially while those new guys learn the system and speed of the game. Moran was brought back from the defensive side to play QB at the end of the season so I don't see it as a position of strength next season. Not saying QB is a position of strength, but Moran was brought from defense because the third and fourth string QBs were not going to be pulled off red shirt unless absolutely necessary. Next year there are 3 scholarship QBs coming back with no red shirts to protect. A fourth scholarship QB/safety, we do not know for sure where Moran will end up. Right now we have 2 freshman QBs coming in. This puts us potentially at 6 scholarships at QB. Most colleges do not like going above 5/6 scholarships at QB. I would like Carta Samuels to come, but I am not certain I want to sacrifice at another position. Coach Smith will have to decide how many scholarship QBs he wants and whether we have a spot. If we have room then he would be a good pick up in my opinion. Another interesting development will be Smith's ability to bring in a walk on QB or 2 to provide adequate depth.

They would be hard pressed to get Willard to transfer. He is very vested in Oregon State with deep roots. He sees Oregon State as his dream school. That leaves the only one that is likely being Blount. The problem with Blount is he came as a walk on and earned a scholarship. He probably does not have a lot of transfer opportunities. Blount also will be a red shirt sophomore and transferring to a same division school will leave him with 2 years to play. They may all end up staying.

Remember that Joey 5-Picks' backup at Zero spent some time in the NFL. It's possible to be a quality Pac 12 QB and still be a backup. He (AJ Feeley) actually spent *more* time in the NFL than Joey did. I always found that interesting. Matt Cassell greater than Leinart also. Browning beating him out for the job his hardly an indictment, Browning is very good.

No Blount earned a scholarship. Is there a source for that? I never heard that. Not in a situation to link. Beaversedge.com article August 17, 2017. Title: Oregon State's backup quarterbacks are practicing patience.

I sort of figured one reason Blount didn't want to play this season was so he would have the option to transfer to an FCS school and play 3 years (or go the JC==>FBS route like Luton did). I don't think the redshirting is an indication he's locked in at OSU. Just my take.

I would be careful about saying having a bunch of "Non-D1 QBs on the roster". Good coaching can make a big difference at the QB position. Luton is on the roster as well. Is he a D1 guy? A guy like Blount was put into a rough situation but he does have a little experience. You combine experience with some coaching and you could develop a pretty good QB. Depends on his work ethic, coachability, football IQ. But it seems a little over the top to say that none of these guys are D1 player just because they came in through the previous regime. The two incoming freshmen Dukart and Petras (assuming they stay) could also add some good depth?! Go Beavs!

I know he redshirted; that's it. Is he any good? I'll be the first one to admit that I don't trust Andersen in the QB evaluation arena, but has anyone heard anything about Willard that would suggest that he should definitely stay or definitely go?

Sorry, not knowable. I have no reason to believe he won't be great. Tongue in cheek(kind of) any QB the previous staff had a hand in add a bit of concern....lol. Looks like a fine young prospect, wouldn't go so far as to claim he's on par or better than Gebbia/O'brien just yet. I do like his size, dependent upon what our offense will look like. You know for a fact that Gebbia and O'Brien [two QBs?] are transferring or is this speculation?
