I always thought the chances of landing Heyward were low. He's clearly angling for his career, and has already done the nostalgia thing at OSU under Riley (and bolted at the first sign of a better opportunity with a conference rival, and took recruits with him). He's high output (at least in recruiting), but also high ego, I suspect. We should definitely make contact and gauge interest, but I'm not sure how hard JS would really go after him...

Ya... he's a former BEAVER, that's about it. He's been a bit of a vagabond and word of mouth has him being a good recruiter. But, anyone who knows many current of former D1 coaches, recruiting is often a "team" effort. The HC is always the closer... if the HC doesn't show "love" the assts are not bringing in too many kids on their own. Keith took kids from OSU to a program seen as a better overall football school. Those kids had to be wanted by UW, they didn't just tag along because Keith told them to come. I've actually never understood the coaching "love" toward Keith on this board. Most seems to be framed around being a BEAVER and rumor. As far as I know from guys in the biz Keith was never offered a better position/salary to stay put vs taking other offers. Using the same logic as those that see him as a key coach to get, why was it never a priority he was retained? 12 years, 7 stops (OSU twice)... I'm thinking he is not ready for a DC job.... wasn't offered anything but a lateral move. So, if lateral and salary is the same, not so much a Beav to me, just a former player who I liked. Thinking JS has a better option for DC.

Thinking JS has a better option for DC. Objectively, I think you’re right. Since we were talking about Beaver players returning “home” I personally wanted KH for the recruiting aspect, but I wasn’t being very objective about it. Possible KH was never offered a DC spot, and as you mentioned, he’s a rogue agent (like most coaches) without a ton of loyalty specific to one coach or program. CJS is a smart guy, and he will pick a DC he can trust both personally and to manage the defense. It will be interesting to see who it ends up being. I haven’t seen another mention of Wyoming’s DC. And wouldn’t it be pretty atypical for him to wait until after the bowl game? I noticed the job postings for football assistant coaches closed finally. Announcements this next week?

Eggers is probably right but remember how he just botched the Petras commitment story. We ALL whiffed on Petras.

What I see with Heyward is his options are still open. He could be anywhere next season.
Leavitt was asked prior to the bowl game if he was possibly headed to FSU. His answer was “I am only focused on the upcoming bowl game” or something along those lines. Good chance he’s gone in 4 days. At which point, uo needs a new DC. Then is Heyward in the mix? If not, will he and the new DC want to work together? There’s still a bunch of variables in the mix to definitely say Heyward is staying put.

I hadn’t put it together like that, but that’s definitely possible. Which brings up the possibility that we wind up with a new DC (the guy from Wyoming...?) and Heyward as position coach as well. ( And with Heyward’s history, he jumps ship after a year or two max, dragging a couple prized recruits with him... That’s just speculation, of course. Hope that doesn’t happen again.) DrunkandStupid - applying your thought process to Heyward, what do we know about him? Great player! Very good recruiter! Supposedly a very good coach..probably is. Someone not real loyal to any particular school, likely including the one he played at and graduated from. Quick to jump ship when a slightly better opportunity comes up. (Maybe / probably many college coaches are like that?). Being fans we want everyone involved to be very loyal to our program. Well, CJS knows what he is looking for in a coaching staff. Here’s to him assembling a Low Ego / High Productivity group of guys that work well together!
