My Badger fan insight is that this will be a great hire for you guys. I did not think the same of Gary. We could see issues brewing with him here. Tibs is not in that same boat. You could argue that OLB has been our best position group since he's been here. It didn't matter who we had, they were all studs.
Many of us thought he would end up being our DC. A lot of Badger fans were very comfortable with him in that position. He just ran into a circumstance the last time where Leonhard is an absolute stud and a Badger legend that played for Barry. That shouldn't be seen as a knock on Tibs.
I don't know what he'll be able to do in his first year, but I think he could be a great long term hire. Not only that but he's a loyal guy. I don't think he had to stay with Wisconsin last year. We honestly want the best for him. Many of our defensive coaches have excelled elsewhere as well.
Aranda, Wilcox, Ash, Doeren, Partridge, etc.. have all found success. Gary didn't come from the traditional Wisconsin tree so it also makes sense he was an outlier.

Great to hear, thanks for sharing your insights. Hopefully he is leaving Whisky on good terms, I don’t think Chryst can fault him for taking on a promotion. I’m sure Chryst gave an honest assessment to Niner and Riley with their connection as well. Found this article, it looks like Chryst thought enough of Tibesar to give him the biggest raise when he got passed over for the DC gig. Was making 340k, couldn’t find 2017 numbers. www.google.com/amp/host.madison.com/sports/college/football/badgers-football-tim-tibesar-given-big-raise-as-uw-allocates/article_ee5d42bf-cce9-55f1-9370-f3bdaee43225.amp.html

Thanks for the thoughtful comments about Coach Tibesar. I was thinking the same thing about him not getting the DC role at WU. We know Wilcox, and he’s a proven D-Coordinator who already made a difference at Cal as a first-time HC this year. I knew that I’d heard of Leonhard - I dodn’t Know that he was a Badger. I love the idea of guys getting to go back and coach at their alma mater (obviously very hopeful that it works out well for JS at OSU). I too have noticed how good your linebackers have been, and if Coach Tibesar has been the glue for that, along with his success as a DC at other stops, he sounds like a really nice hire for us. Thanks for making me feel even better about this.

There really is nothing I could even come up with that would be negative. My friends and I stayed at the same hotel as the team for the B1G championship game and ran in to him and other coaches. He seemed like a really friendly guy and they all seemed like family. Take it for what it's worth, but I would have been completely happy had he become our DC.

Working out great so far.

Working out great so far. Paul Chryst is an absolute gem. Big fan of his from his time in Corvallis, you guys have a good one with him. It's obvious that the Alvarez coaching tree has a strong (positive) influence on Wisconsin - the only real dips that have happened since he moved into the AD happened under coaches outside his tree.
