Would you mind linking the article that quotes Jim Wilson please? There has been so much discussion on this subject but I've yet to see the actual quote(s). I remember him saying something about the program being in better shape during a post game show, but thought it was more qualified or specific than how it's been represented here. I actually poked around (briefly) to see if the post game shows were archived so I could hear exactly what it was that he said. Outside of that post game show, I am not aware of him addressing the subject. I've seen posters paraphrase and discuss the general comments, but I'd like to hear it from the horse's mouth so to speak. I only recall his comments being on the radio as well, although I am pretty sure I heard him talk about it on multiple occasions... I would also wager to guess that if pressed on it now he would backtrack big time, over a bunch of qualifications, and realign himself with Jonathan Smith and Mike Riley immediately... It's odd how seriously some of the folks take a ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES comments... OF COURSE the Oregon State Radio personalities are going to treat the current head coach with some kid gloves and extra doses of benefit of the doubt. IMHO the whole "QA has the program in a better place" talk was just that. Talk. There was nothing else good Jim Wilson could point to as a positive so he made one up, sue him. I never once heard him say it after QA left it was only during the season when they were still trying to find ANYTHING positive to talk about. And Wilson was sure to say the "program" meaning the facilities are improved (not that QA had anything to do with that) the graduation rates, etc. I don't actually ever remember hearing Wilson say that QA himself left the program in a better state, just that the program IS in a better place... And like I said earlier he certainly wasn't saying it after QA left and Rome fully fell... Bottom line, Jim Wilson is a radio personality with some really good insights and by position HAS to be OSU positive... I guarantee the next time he is on the radio he will be telling glowing stories about his interactions with Smith and Riley over the years and about how everything feels SO MUCH BETTER now that QA is gone and the Calvary has arrived... The statements were made soon after Andersen quit - otherwise there's no point in saying that he "left" the program in better shape than he inherited it.

Which made JW's comments even more strange to me. GA was no longer OSU's coach, so sugar coating was no longer mandatory UNLESS Barnes/Admin said to keep things positive. But, even at that, to say the "program" was better off was completely in the "looney bin" category, and honestly made me look at JW in a entirely different light. Be positive, but to say such foolishness is either a personal bias/friendship, or a misuse of the word 'program'. Although I'm not sure in what definition that could hold water, except for academics. And, that is a misconception as the athletic academics were under a revamp and improvement before GA had any input. But, at that it is the ONLY part of the 'program' he remotely can be given credit for improving. Any layman who follows OSU football even casually knows that 'program' entails much more than the level of players in the program. The physical plant improved, but GA had almost zero input in the making it happen. The level of player can be bandied about, but there was absolutely no significant improvement in talent. In fact, I'd say there was a severe drop off I'd back that up with the fact that the level of recruiting is then transferred to the level of coaching. Hence, out players never remotely began to reach their potential, and in fact some still look as if they are playing at a HS level. Couple the poor coaching, with the atmosphere now lingering this program is well below the level in which MR took over in his first stint... IMHO.

Regardless of the timing or anything else, I stand by the idea that Wilson was just trying to fill air time with something positive about OSU, which is why he called out the program being in a good place (something Jonathan Smith pointed out as well...), I don't remember him necessarily giving QA credit for any of it, I heard it more as a, things aren't as bad as they seem message to try to keep things positive, and I also didn't hear into it the subtle dig at Pre-QA Riley like some people have... I am willing to bet we don't hear the official play by play guys mention Andersen in anything but passing from here on out

Thanks for the link... I haven't seen Wilsons quotes in ink before, just going off of the memory of radio conversations... This is probably the key quote: Ok... I see the Riley dig there Maybe Wilson figured Riley was never coming back so there was no harm in throwing him under the bus... But overall I still see it as mostly a tone and message of positivity going forward, not necessarily one praising Andersen for any actual coaching. He admits earlier in the article that the managing of the staff was no good and that its been a disaster. Talent wise, it is hard to tell if QAs poor coaching is masking some superior (to 2015) talent or not, but lots of folks, including Jonathan Smith, believe there is plenty of talent "in the cupboard"... While we may not like it, and while it doesn't seem logical, for whatever reason QA is getting some credit for the Valley upgrade as well, just because he was sitting HC when it was finished... I don;t give him any credit for that, but clearly others do...

One of the things CJS has emphasized in interviews lately is that when it comes to assistants he is looking for coaches who are great teachers.
He's not saying the coaches that were here weren't, but I'm glad he's recognizing that's a top priority. Recruiting doesn't get you very far if you can't teach 'em no matter what the talent level.
