The future looks bright but the past (and the majority of the posts) can be downright depressing.

Yeah, the only improvement of the OL and DL will be a bunch of Freshmen and JC transfers doing OJT. Sadly, this choice is better than the status quo. Anyone want to argue? Watch the tape of winless Portland State shoving our lines all over the field.

That in itself gives me a bit of hope the same kids we had this year will do better next year now that we have new coaches.

Bad year to implement the 4-3 with only two Dlinemen on the roster that are at best serviceable. Though I will argue both Eydon and Vaki have physical talent enough to be quality DTs and are now upperclassmen.

As bad a year it is to go back to the 4/3 we really don’t have the talent up front to run a great 3/4 full time either I suspect. I hope Hodgins comes ready to play and a couple of our existing DEs step up. It would still be nice to pick up at least 1 ready to play kid at both DT and DE spots.

Really surprised no JC DL signings in December.....boy we are razor thin on the defensive side. Two years to rebuild the Dline and it seems to me there's trouble thru 2019.....maybe by 2020 we're competitive up front again.

They really had only a few days with a partial staff before the signing period. I’ll be surprised if there aren’t any JCs brought in the next round to help bolster the D line.

I think that there is some talent on both lines at OSU that will improve with better coaching. I think that the lines have been the weak link for the past few years and am hoping that the new line coaches will really ramp it up. Frankly, I have more faith in Michalczik than I do Suianoa at this point. I was excited about the coaching hires up until Coach Smith hired the Hawai'ian guys...Now, I'm not quite as sure. Hawai'i has been a weak team in a weak conference as of late and I'm a little concerned that Coach Smith went there to grab two coaches...it's the first thing that I have seen Smith do that makes me a little nervous.

More LBs and big DB s available than Dlineman and not a guy that can play a 4-3 Dend. Not a one. As much as we argue that th 3-4 needs a specialized talent, that’s one guy. (And I think Eydon can can that NT force) You need two pretty specialized ends to run the 4-3 effectively. And a middle guy that can play two A gap and tackle/cover in space. Right now we can field a 3-4 or even the dreaded 3-5 but four down guys aren’t on the roster. Sad I dream of a VanOrsow - Joe Lemma combination right now.

I've got no worries about Suianoa. Jonathan worked with him and has called him "one of the best, maybe the best, developers of defensive linemen he's worked with." The guy had some really good DE's at Montana. I think he'll do just fine.
DT is probably our single biggest need on the team right now.I think Vakemeilalo is a stud. Eydon is huge, but he was pretty "fluffy" much of this year and I'm not so sure how well he can maintain a presence for an entire game unless a good bit of that fluffiness disappears or turns to muscle (I do think I noticed improvement in that regard over the season so I'm hopeful).

So, Evans is gone? Not eligible for 2018? See: Simi Kuli We do have two players in the DL exodus that indicated they'd come back... Turnier and Garcia. I'm not sure if they are still interested or eligible... but
