I'll be happy to see change. However if Coach Smith chooses to suit up only 60% of the team for the Civil War game I'll Lose all confidence in the coaching staff.

We will need patience. for sure we are probably not a bowl team next season. But we should all expect to see improvement next year as a minimum expectation. Maybe we win only 4 games. but that is okay as long as we see a team that has an identity, structure, consistency, etc. As long as we see guys in position, clean football, and strong effort we know that he will get the guys over the next few cycles and we are building to something. After 3 years of anything but consistency, that is the first and foremost thing the team needs. They need an offense and a defense and to stick to it. get good at what they are trying to do, stop moving the goal posts around. I can honestly say, we will have a good sense if CJS has "it" in year one... but it won't have much to do with the W/L. it will be everything we see with our eyes. Just like we saw it with our eyes in 1997 and 1998. Even in that 3-8 first year, you saw a new offense with potential. a whole new brand of football. and yes, 5-6 was still losing, but most of the loses were close and of course we toppled Oregon in the end. That is the arc we can probably expect. maybe not W/L and bowl games for a season or two, but tangible, real evidence of improvement, of a new team identity, a new attitude and all that. I think 3 wins and an obvious plan would be a reasonable enough improvement for most people who are paying any attention to the team to see. Winning more than that in year 1 is certainly possible. We have a tougher schedule with the trip to Columbus on the slate, but this team could have easily gone 3-9 last year if 2 plays had gone differently. I think most of us are hoping for a team that is competitive for a change. The players that we had last year weren't ever put in a position to be able to win by the coaching staff, and I see that is where we change. We will at least have a chance to win most games, even if we can't quite close them out. Blowout losses to close losses won't look as dramatic on the W/L total but will feel a whole lot different to watch. That's what I'm looking forward to.

coaching via demagoguery is generally a terrible idea. Abe Lincoln= huge demagogue. You saying Abe can't coach a lick of football??? Turns out that tall beaver fur hat couldn’t absorb any hits. Abe reportedly played his whole career “Dinged up”. Rumor has it that he was so confused he thought he signed the Precipitation Proclimation, as Illinois was experiencing drought and he was beholden to a powerful super pac of farmers. Or something like that.

* Early on in the scrimmage, one number that I saw in on several tackles in a row was #51, Redshirt Sophomore Inside LB Luke Leonnig. I have never heard of him, but he stuck out to me as being in on quite a few plays, whether tackling a runner for a short gain or pressuring the QB. Might be a name to keep an eye out for in the future. Awesome !!!! Luke is my cousin's grandson and comes from a LONG line of Beaver alums. Would love to see him get some playing time this season. Thanks for the callout JimBeav !!

Quarter backs:
Luton: looks meh... Coletto: looks better than luton.. Blount looks to be the best out of the three. Great touch on the Ball! Williams: has a good arm and air under the ball. Timing needs work. Moran: ehh Wished the see Matt Moore's brother play on Scrimmage
Running Backs: Wallace: meh Artavious pierce: Looks good 👌🏻 Calvin tyler: looks good 👌🏻👍🏻 BJ Baylor: Good speed 👍🏻 Scored 1 TD
Wide outs: Hernendez: looks good! Two TD catches Rest of recivers : they look like they need more work.
Tight ends: Didn't see a lot of usage of them
Offensive line: Look a bit better, a little bit atleast.
Overall grade for offense: C Quarterbacks need alil more work along with the wide receivers. Offensive line looks Okay. But overall the offense has so much more work to do. Honestly Luton should not even be mentioned for the starting spot this year. Blount and Williams looks far better than Luton. On the plus side, defense made some good plays. Couple Ints and fumble recoveries and knocked away passes.
Team looks okay under Smith. Though they're Going to get ripped and shredded hard against Ohio State....

My card looks different: Colletto and Luton- split decision. Yeah Colletto runs much better but his ball is flat and lacks touch and honestly the spring showcase doesn't have the tight windows of Pac 12 Live Action. Luton has already proven he can throw the ball at a Division 1 level. Colletto may eventually beat him out because yes Jake Luton doesnt do some of the little things like run good fakes or use good footwork but right now he is a proven legit passer. Remember if you cant throw the ball around the yard with some dispatch the defenses will collapse on you. Luton's throwing ability finally started to open up the playbook a little last year. Colletto maybe has some IT factor but i didnt see enough yet to say he is the starter. The other qbs looked scared and feeble just my opinion. It's ok to disagree with me if you aren't wrong

Blount looked the best of the QB's. One stud WR and a couple RB's are on the roster. TE's, who knows? OL was sometimes okay. DB's could be moved to WR if we need help there. At least they know how to catch the ball! D-unit looks like one that can stuff one play and give up a chunk play the next time around.
Oh well, it's a work in progress. Hope to see a real spring game on TV next year with an upgrade in talent and performance that shows we are on the way back.

Hmmmmm...
1) we looked well organized, pop around, we're deeper than people think in some areas
2) huge improvements in OL pad level and footwork on run fits and pass pro
3) Fifita(?) and Garcia can play DL
4) RBs are all solid and offer good combo of hitting the hole, lateral movement, and pass catching. Wallace is a bit tentative but easy to see he's talented and will play somewhere
5) we need a QB... period. Luton threw several poor balls, mishandled at least two snaps, made terrible late decision to throw an easy pick. He also missed seeing Tyler on at least two RB swing routes that were uncovered.
Colletto is a run first, dump off passer. He threw a couple simple swing passes 3 yds short and inside of a wide open RB. He'll give the offense no real deep respect and also made several poor throws and mishandled a couple good snaps.
Blount throws a decent ball, had trouble several times getting signals called correctly for personnel and plays.
A good transfer could come in during the summer and beat any of these three out with a simplified playbook. We'll need 4 RBs unless the QB play GREATLY improves.
6) vastly better footwork, angles, tackling form.
7) WR/slot/TE were all average, but really hard to tell as routes seemed crisper, there was separation at times but some terrible throws. Hard to see a standout (Hodgins in street clothes) when ball doesn't get there consistently.
Pleasantly surprised by the look, feel, and improved fundamentals. BUT, that was all washed away watching the QBs operate....

I thought Blount had the best touch by far in the passing game. Colletto and Luton were both ok, Colletto with maybe an edge for his running ability. I somehow missed most of Willard, ni such thing as a Williams at QB as far as I can tell, did see one nice pass but he didn't stand out to me. Didn't notice Moran at all, did he actually play a down at QB?
